Former Rotherham boss Alan Knill has returned to League Two Bury as manager.

Knill, 43, played at Gigg Lane between 1989 and 1993. He will leave his job as assistant to Lee Richardson at Chesterfield to take up the role.

"I am both disappointed to lose Alan yet pleased that he has this chance to get back into management," Richardson said of the news.

"We wish him well and I thank him for his support at Chesterfield."

Richardson later announced that Knill is to be replaced by Scott Sellars, who has been released from his role as a coach at Sheffield United's academy.

"I have known Scott for many years as we played together at Blackburn Rovers and Huddersfield Town," said Richardson.

"We completed our coaching qualifications together so I am delighted that he is joining us."

Sellars added: "I am honoured to get this chance to move my career forward with Chesterfield and am really looking forward to getting stuck in straight away."

Knill arrives at Bury with the club struggling towards the foot of League Two, two points from the relegation zone, having sacked former Manchester United trainee Chris Casper last month.

Chris Brass took the reigns and led the club past Championship side Norwich in the FA Cup third round before losing to Southampton in round four.

The Shakers were hammered 5-1 at home by runaway leaders Milton Keynes Dons at the weekend.
