Manchester United have been fined £25,000 by the Football Association after seven of their players received yellow cards during the 1-1 draw with Tottenham at the weekend.

The fine is automatically handed out to any side that has six or more players booked in a single match.

The club will not face any further disciplinary action, though if it happens again then they will receive an additional £50,000 fine.

Referee Mark Clattenburg handed out nine yellow cards in all, with goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, defenders Wes Brown and Nemanja Vidic, wingers Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani and front duo Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez all going into the official's book.

Rio Ferdinand defended his team mate's actions after several United players confronted the linesman after Dimitar Berbatov's goal had given Spurs the lead.

The referee's assistant did not back up United claims for a handball in the build-up to the goal, and Ferdinand told the Manchester Evening News: "I thought they were fortunate with their goal. It was handball and how the linesman didn't see it I will never know.

"I was behind it and I could see it and I don't know how the linesman didn't. That's why I was remonstrating with him.

"I thought he handled it. Owen [Hargreaves] would have cleaned up if he hadn't hit the ball with his hand and then it led to the cross and the goal."
