Transfers - Transfer Talk: round-up

Eurosport - Mon, 04 Feb 15:10:00 2008

Re-live the action as it unfolded on transfer deadline day.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 Premier League Portsmouth Benjani - 0

02:11 - Well that's it for another few months. Transfer Talk is going into hibernation until the summer with the new Pro Evo and a bumper pack of Bond films. But don't forget - you can get all the weekend's team news here tomorrow on Eurosport-Yahoo!

02:00 - I don't know if Harry is aware of it yet, but it was in fact Benjani's fault that the deal was not done in time - Man City have accused him of turning up late to sign and cocking up the whole shebang. And keeping TT awake until this ungodly hour. Boo.

01:30 - Well, well - so much for cursing lax FA and Premier League admin staff for not telling us officially about Benjani. It looks like his move to Man City has fallen through because the paperwork was not sent through on time. Serves them all right for waiting until the last minute - although TT can hardly talk given his record of packing suitcases for foreign holidays.

01:19 - Harry Redknapp has hinted that Benjani's move has gone through as he says that the Defoe move hinged on it - and we know that is a done deal.

00:53 - BIG DEAL! Praise God - Defoe's move to Portsmouth has gone through. Not that TT is a Pompey supporter (or for that matter a Spurs one) - he's just a big, big fan of his bed. Only Benjani and a few more loose ends to go.

00:20 - Sheffield Wednesday again secure the efforts of Sunderland midfielder Graham Kavanagh on loan. The 'Silver Fox' will remain at Hillsborough for the rest of the season.

00:00 - Five, four, three, two, one... the transfer window is no more!! But don't go anywhere (if you're daft enough to still be up and reading this) - there will be more deals reported yet. Specifically we are still waiting on the Defoe-Benjani saga.

23:30 - Middlesbrough FINALLY complete a club-record deal of over £12 million for Brazil striker Afonso Alves from Heerenveen. He joins on a four-and-a-half-year contract. After all this guff he had better be good - even TT fancies its chances fo scoring seven goals in one match in the Eredivisie!

23:13 - Things are just getting silly now. Benjani's move to City is going to be tight as he is currently on a training pitch in a gale under floodlights undergoing a medical. You'd think that sort of thing would turn him off a move up north; but it takes all sorts.

23:00 - MANCINI SIGNS FOR MAN CITY!! Sorry to mislead you - the Mancini in question is in fact Inter coach Roberto Mancini's son Filippo, only 17. He arrives on loan.

22:20 - And there's more: Spurs centre-half Anthony Gardner departs to Everton for the rest of the campaign.

22:15 - BIG DEAL! Spurs have had another look at that failed medical of Gilberto and decided he is worth the risk. The Hertha Berlin left-sided star used to be signed to Inter. It looks like Juande Ramos has put his foot down with the Tottenham medical staff.

22:10 - Sheffield United fans will be licking their lips in anticipation of Internazionale striker Goran Slavkovski's arrival on loan at Bramall Lane.

21:40 - What would the script be without a few jilted husbands thrown in? Michael Husbands, to be exact: Macclesfield, near the bottom of League Two, have cancelled the striker's deal with them.

21:35 - Deadline Day would just not be the same without a bit of nepotism. No, not Transfer Talk returning to feature for his Dad again at his childhood club; but Hartlepool's Ian Moore joining his own former club Tranmere, managed by his old man Ronnie.

21:24 -Wycombe with a bit of a coup: they secure the services of Neil Lennon from Nottingham Forest on a free transfer.

20:45 - Fulham are making waves - in all the wrong directions. Midfielder Steve Davis departs for Rangers in Scotland on a loan deal until the end of the season, while goalkeeper Tony Warner leaves to join Championship side Barnsley on a one-month loan.

20:21 - And Pompey boss Harry Redknapp says he is hoping to see Defoe on the south coast, assuming that Benjani's deal in Manchester goes through later.

20:20 - More shenanigans at Manchester City as striker Ishmael Miller seals a permanent deal with West Brom for an undisclosed fee.

20:05 -Stoke take striker Paul Gallagher from Blackburn until the end of the season. He was previously on loan at the Britannia Stadium; but after that spent time at Preston.

19:40 - Championship promotion-chasers Charlton bag Lee Cook on loan from Fulham.

19:05 -BIG DEAL! Well it's not strictly speaking a move, but Liverpool's Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano will remain permanently at the Merseyside club - according to early reports, at least.

18:45 - Celtic's Czech midfielder Jiri Jarosik leaves the Scottish club to join Russian outfit Samara.

18:33 - BIG DEAL! Ecuador striker Felipe Caicedo - as predicted this morning - moves from FC Basel to Manchester City on a four-and-a-half year deal for £5.2 million.

18:30 - Newcastle centre-half David Rozehnal has joined Lazio on a loan deal until the end of the season, according to his agent. Dabo's move back to the Italian capital from Man City is also complete.

18:10 - Bolton have bagged another, slightly better-known Pole - no, not Peter Crouch - in Southampton striker Grzegorz Rasiak. He will play at the Reebok until the end of the season, when his loan expires.

18:00 - Now this one is again far from big news for you money-hungry transfer addicts, but what a name this lad has got on him! Przemyslaw Kazimierczak, a Poland Under-21 goalie, has joined Darlington on a free transfer from Bolton.

17:45 - A bit of a lull in the Premier League so we might as well let you know that Watford have signed Stoke captain John Eustace for £250,000, potentially rising to £400,000 if the Hornets go up from the Championship.

17:12 - Another goalie not going anywhere is Manchester City man Andreas Isaksson. Initially expected to be a shoo-in between the posts this season once he had recovered from injury, the Sweden number one - who needs first-team football ahead of Euro 2008 - has struggled to displace youngsters Kasper Schmeichel and Joe Hart. Sven's mate Tord Grip has revealed that he does not fancy a loan move to Galatasaray.

16:55 - Aston Villa have given up hope of netting 'goaltender' Brad Guzan after the American failed in his application for a work permit. Martin O'Neill was willing to part with £2 million to capture him, so the Chivas man - much like the whiskey of the same name - must be pretty tasty, but he'll now have to get a bit more experience before he can hope to work over here.

16:20 - Tottenham have accepted a bid from Portsmouth for Jermain Defoe. It's now up to the player himself to decide whether he stays or goes.

15:37 - Newcastle sign unknown (in these parts at least) Atalanta forward Fabio Zamblera on a four-year deal. The 17-year-old target man is apparently very highly rated over in Italy, so we'll dub him "the new Luca Toni", although he could well turn out to be the new Rolando Bianchi.

15:35 - Both Afonso Alves and Benjani have been granted work permits ahead of their possible moves to Middlesbrough and Manchester City.

15:30 - The pace is quickening now as we edge ever nearer the midnight deadline. Veteran defender Alan Stubbs has signed for Derby on an 18-month contract.

15:05 - Looks like Finland defender Toni Kallio has also landed at Craven Cottage as Hodgson uses his Finnish contacts work to the max to make a double swoop. The 29-year-old arrives at Fulham from Young Boys Berne and can play at either centre back or full-back.

15:04 - Finland striker Jari Litmanen, who must now be at least in his sixties, signs for Fulham until the end of the season. Actually, a bit of research reveals he is only (only?) 36, but Roy Hodgson clearly thinks he can do a job at Craven Cottage.

14:35 - Not strictly a transfer story, but if there was a club thinking of making a move for Andrew Taylor, they can think again after the England Under-21 signed a new contract with Middlesbrough. The new deal means the defender will now stay at the Riverside until 2011.

14:28 - Arsenal youngster Kieran Gibbs has been farmed out to Norwich (really, no pun intended) on loan until the end of the season to gain more experience.

14:00 - Ten hours and counting before that window is closed, although as someone correctly pointed out earlier, a few deals may be allowed to go through after that deadline - remember Ashley Cole's move from Arsenal to Cheslea? Which does rather beg the question - why bother with a deadline in the first place?

13:59 - Sunderland full-back Greg Halford drops down a division and goes to Charlton on loan until the end of the season after having been voted (by TT, at least) last summer's worst value-for-money buy.

13:54 - Ousmane Dabo, he of Joey Barton's-given-me-a-black-eye-and-a bust-lip fame, is on the verge of returning to former club Lazio. All that remains to do before the Frenchman can make his move, according to Biancocelesti president Claudio Lotitia, is the paperwork.

13:33 - Daniel Cousin's move to Fulham may well still be in the balance - and with those suits on the FIFA panel taking an inordinately long lunch, we can't expect a decision until much later - but it seems Rangers have already got a replacement lined up in the shape of Sampdoria striker Andrea Caracciolo. The former Palermo beanpole (former as in ex-Palermo - he's still a beanpole) has struggled for form since moving from Sicily and is believed to be keen on a move to the Scottish giants.

13:04 - Biggest news of the day so far - Benjani is undergoing a medical at Manchester City. The Zimbabwean striker is at Eastlands and surely he won't fail a medical there - he played last night for goodness sake - which all means, unless TT is a total idiot (although we're not ruling that out), that Benjani will become a City player later today. That could have implications for Jermain Defoe, who has been tipped as Benjani's successor at Fratton Park.

12:44 - And there's the confirmation of Roy Carroll's move to Derby. The former Wigan, Manchester United and West Ham man finally arrives at Pride Park until the end of the season after a rather drawn out saga.

12:12 - Possibly the Premier League's worst keeper earlier this campaign (if only because he had the misfortune to play behind the top flight's leakiest back line), Stephen Bywater is now set for a new lease of life at Ipswich. A loan deal until the end of the season has been agreed with Bywater set to replace Neil Alexander, who left the Tractor Boys for Rangers yesterday. And to complete the three-way game of musical goal posts, Roy Carroll is expected to leave Rangers and join Derby, meaning everyone could end the day with a new keeper.

12:01 - That fee for Reid is believed to be in the region of £4 million.

11:51 - Roy Keane gets his man! Sunderland agree a fee to take Andy Reid from Charlton. Not sure what that fee is at the moment but it looks like the Irishman will be lining up in the Black Cats midfield sometime very soon - maybe even for Saturday's clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

11: 48 - Another man who will not, repeat will not, be going to White Hart Lane is Brazilian defender Gilberto. It was as good as a done deal a week ago, but the Hertha Berlin player's move has hit a snag, or more accurately two, namely a pair of failed medicals. Looks like Tottenham have learnt their lesson after Darren Anderton.

11:29 - Finally some good news for Newcastle fans - it may not be a new recruit, but at least Charles N'Zogbia won't be going to Tottenham today. Spurs have rejected rumours linking them with the young Frenchman, much to the disappointment of the agents who started the rumour in the first place.

11:05 - There could be something in that Benjani-to- Manchester-City rumour. Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has reportedly made a bid for Jermain Defoe who would be an ideal replacement for the free-scoring Benjani, if only he could find the back of the net more often. Apparently Benjani would cost City £6.5 million while Defoe would go to Fratton Park for £9 million, which isn't the best of business for Pompey, but hey ho, that's the way it goes.

10:59 - Manucho may well have been tearing things up at the African Cup of Nations, but Alex Ferguson clearly thinks he is not quite ready for the rigours of the Premier League. The Angola international reckons he will be loaned out to Greek side Panathinaikos for the rest of the season. "I am looking forward to playing in Greece before hopefully being a success at Old Trafford," he said.

10:35 - A few lower league titbits to keep you occupied while we wait for the big boys to get involved (but don't blame us if it doesn't happen). Norwich have taken teenagers Alex Pearce and James Henry on loan from Reading while Watford have signed defender Leigh Bromby from Sheffield United.

10:22 - The Kevin Keegan revolution - which may or may not start in a couple of months - is apparently not to everyone's tastes. While most are celebrating the messiah's return, at least one of the Toon's number is not entirely convinced. And that is why defender David Rozehnal has been linked with Lazio and Real Zaragoza.

10:09 - For a player who has barely featured this season, Mohamed Sissoko seems to have been somewhat in demand recently. According to who? Well, him actually. The Mali international claims Newcastle and Tottenham wanted him before he opted to move to Juventus earlier this week.

10:07 - Back to the big boys - Christian "Chippen" Wilhelmsson has admitted defeat at Bolton and has chipped off (boo) to Deportivo La Coruna on a loan deal until the end of the season. The Swede barely featured for the Trotters following his loan move from Nantes, but will hope for more first team action in Spain. He's got a lovely girlfriend, you know.

09:59 - DEAL! Worthy of inclusion here purely because it is the first of the day, Stockport accept a bid from Leeds for striker Anthony Elding. Right, that's your lot for League One today.

09:10 - Other big names to watch out for today - Giles Barnes to Newcastle, Stewart Downing to Tottenham and Pascal Chimbonda to Aston Villa. Stay with us throughout the day for all the latest.

09:07 - FIFA will make a decision today on whether to allow Daniel Cousin to move from Rangers to Fulham. The Gabon striker has played for two sides already this season and joining a third would breach FIFA rules. There's no knowing what the outcome of this one will be - watch this space.

09:05 - Sunderland boss Roy Keane is not frightened of splashing a bit of cash and he could well tie up a deal for Charlton midfielder Andy Reid today. £4 million is the asking price for the Irishman, but that won't put off Keano.

09:04 - One of the biggest losers of the window so far has been Sven-Goran Eriksson. Not only has Manchester City's form on the pitch dipped slightly, old Svennis seems incapable of attracting new talent to Eastlands. And with the departure of Georgios Samaras and Rolando Bianchi, Sven is now starting to sweat a little. He may have to resort to picking up 19-year-old FC Basle striker Felipe Caicedo in a late bid to strengthen his attacking options.

09:03 - Afonso Alves - who has been dubbed the "walking typo" on these pages - could yet seal a move to Middlesbrough if his appeal to win a work permit is granted today. He better get himself down to Rymans as soon as possible and invest in a rather large pair of scissors to cut through all that red tape.

09:02 - But that could all change today with a number of outstanding issues on the cusp of being settled.

09:00 - So, here we are after what seems to have been an inordinately lengthy month. The days have been short and dark, it has been cold, people have been miserable after the fun of the festive season and Transfer Talk's request for a pay rise was ignored. And to make matters worse, we have had to put up with a never-ending stream of transfer rumours, few of which have come to fruition over the past four weeks.
