Roma defender Christian Panucci has apologised for refusing to go on the bench in Roma's 3-0 win at Napoli in January.

The Italy stopper, 35, was angry at being dropped from the starting line-up and subsequently asked to leave the Serie A club.

"I publicly apologise to the fans, my team mates and the club for my behaviour," Panucci, who has been left out of Roma's squad for the knockout phase of the Champions League, told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I put myself back at the disposal of the club and coaching staff for the rest of the season. When I said I wanted to leave it was because I was angry."

The former Milan, Internazionale, Real Madrid and Chelsea full-back was forced to return to Roma after a move to Premier League side Hull broke down.
