Australia dumped out of sevens

Australia were sent packing from the Wellington Sevens tournament after failing to progress from their Group D.

The team, coached by Michael O'Connor, were thumped 35-10 by Kenya in their opening pool match and, despite a narrow 14-12 victory over Canada and a 10-10 draw with France, they finished third in the group on points difference.

Canada and France advanced to the last eight at their expense.

Defending series champions New Zealand topped their group with three wins from three to progress along with Samoa while South Africa also posted a 100 per cent record to move into the quarter-finals with England from Group B.

Tonga upset Fiji to finish top of Group C, with both teams progressing.

In Saturday's quarter-finals, New Zealand meet France, Tonga play England, Canada face Samoa and South Africa clash with Fiji.
