Premier League - Paper Round: Team-mates turn on Terry

Sat, 04 Feb 04:28:00 2012

The fall-out from John Terry's sacking as his country's captain dominates the back pages, with claims emerging that the England defender's team-mates have now turned on him.

"We don't want you! England team-mates turn on Terry as the FA ditch race case captain" is the self-explanatory headline in the Daily Mail.

The report goes on to claim: "Sportsmail understands Terry was made aware a number of his black England team-mates had an issue with him - over his clash with Anton Ferdinand at Loftus Road on October 23 - during their last get-together."

Terry could make it a non-issue for those dissenting team-mates by falling on his sword and retiring from international football altogether, according to the Daily Mirror.

The same paper 'exclusively' reveals that Fabio Capello is "furious" with the FA's decision, while The Sun has the headline 'Capello facing Three Lions meltdown', which is sensational but nevertheless reflective of the problems the England camp now face.

It's a sorry mess, for sure, and understandably all the top columnists have been busy beavers since yesterday's announcement.

"John Terry should have done what was right for England not himself — and quit as skipper," says Steven Howard in The Sun, under the headline 'It would’ve been smarter to resign, JT'.

Brian Woolnough writes in the Daily Star: "Dump Terry and end this circus. John Terry is England's Nowhere Man. Discarded and distraught."

"Terry must be excluded if the FA is to find a way out of this moral maze," is the opinion of Henry Winter in the Daily Telegraph while the Guardian's Kevin McCarra has this to say: "The FA's move to demote England's captain is a reminder that the Italian is no longer a figure of absolute authority."

Former England manager Terry Venables points out in his column in The Sun that a man is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty before bringing up the possible illegality of the FA's actions.

And Oliver Holt in the Daily Mirror says the FA had little choice to strip Terry of the captaincy because, "the entire fabric of English football has altered in the days that have elapsed since (Terry was charged four days before Christmas) - partly for the good, partly not."

To some transfer tittle-tattle to provide some light relief on what is an oppressive day of football news, and Real Madrid are set to make a swoop for Sergio Aguero in the summer.

The Spanish giants knocked back a Chelsea bid for Gonzalo Higuain last month, but may be ready to sell to fund a move for Manchester City striker Aguero. (Daily Mirror)

Anzhi Makhachkala are still hopeful of securing the services of Carlos Tevez, as the Manchester City striker weighs up his options with the transfer window still open in some countries.

The wealthy Russian club have more than enough cash to meet Tevez's nigh on £200,000-a-week wage demands but are yet to make a formal offer to City. (Daily Mail)

Barcelona have sent a scout to watch Gareth Bale seven times already this season as the European champions step up their efforts to lure the Welshman to the Nou Camp.

Tottenham are adamant their star man is not for sale, but Barca believe he does have a price, somewhere in the region of £40 million. They may be willing to offer a player-plus-cash deal at the end of the season to test Tottenham's resolve. (Daily Mirror)

Arsenal will put Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud high on their list of priorities in the summer (The Sun) while the Gunners, along with Benfica and Manchester United, also have their eye on Argentina midfielder Claudio Yacob. (Daily Mail)

And finally, Spartak Moscow are lining up a £4.2m offer for Everton's Johnny Heitinga, just weeks after signing his former team-mate Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. (Daily Mail)

  1. This article pretends from the title to name teammates who turn on Terry, justifying the action by FA, etc.. The haters will always find reasons to hate under the hidden agenda "Racism". Suarez was unfairly sanctioned based on the rule dispute rule of the game. FA was never able to prove the case. In Terry's case FA has no evidence, the police has not won the case and today we are imposing punishment before the trial. Shall the world see us as a country in which you are guilty just because you are accused for action that pause no threat to the nation? Using the same justice let us ask our politicians to step down every time they are accused of inappropriate conducts. Please fix the headline to reflect the content of this article. Starting from here let this journalist stand aside as we investigate his/her journalistic credential.

  4. Based on reports that I have read, John Terry has black friends, inside and outside of football. Could it just be that he used a 'rascist' remark towards Anton Ferdinand in the heat of the moment? Black people should never try and convince me that they have never used similar remarks towards white people in a similar situation, because I will not believe them! people seem to overlook the fact that the match between QPR and Chelsea was played at a ferocious pace with some full blooded tackles going in. I watched the game on TV and as a neutral I can state that the ref wasn't doing Chelsea any favours. The net result was that tempers were raised. THEN, just to pour fuel on the fire, Ferdinand made comments to Terry about his past indiscretion with Wayne Bridge's girlfriend! Perhaps that is why Terry reacted in the way he did? Either way, BLACK is just a word, like Irish , Scottish, Welsh, and ENGLISH. All of these words have been used as a prefix to an insult in the past, and the English have attracted more than their fair share due to government foreign policy down the centuries....but it doesn't necessarily mean the person saying it has a deep hatred of that particular colour or race. I would submit that football is a man's game, and in the heat of the moment things will get said. After a hard kick on the ankle perhaps, or when a player has just conned the ref into getting somebody sent off. It is a man's game, grow up, MAN UP, grow a pair, and get on with it. BLOODY BUNCH OF WHINGEING WHOOPSIES! Mummy, that man called me a nasty name, boo hoo, waah! Get my drift Anton? All you are doing is helping to bring the game into further disrepute, and giving the sanctimonious self serving 'journalists' ( Whisky swilling, @#$% chomping, lying gossipers is a more fitting term ) and lawyers (shameless thieves) a free ride. There has been far too much made of this 'incident' and it should have been settled privately with a handshake, a

  16. Laddro thats called aparteid and we do not want that in this country. It seems to me that a lot of football players should hang their heads in shame. How many of you can honestly say, hand on heart that you have an absolute clean sheet of any wrong doing in your lives. Ryan Giggs ( affair), Steven Gerard ( alleged assault), Rio Ferdiand ( in his younger days was no angel)and today avoiding a drugs test, well that smacks of hum, lets see, he had something to hide. Wayne Rooney (likes good time girls) and the list could go on and on. John Terry had an affair, so what, apart from his family whom he has made amends with, it had no affect on his performances on the pitch for England or Chelsea. Racism, well I do not hold with racism at all, IF he said something to Anton Ferdinand then he deserves his punishment, as for the rest of the black players in the England team turning on him, look into your past and say, that when you were young you did not call a white person something racist. BE HONEST about it and if you can stand up honestly and say no, then good on you and your principles. If John did say something and he is insistent on going to court to prove that he did not, then there has to be an element of doubt in the accusations made against him. If JT is found NOT GUILTY, then ANTON FERDINAND should be banned completely, have his registration torn up and binned. So he cannot use the Racist card again.

  18. The report goes on to claim: "Sportsmail understands Terry was made aware a number of his black England team-mates had an issue with him - over his clash with Anton Ferdinand at Loftus Road on October 23 - during their last get-together."

Does this mean that John Terry's white English team mates have no issue with him and if so does it mean they are also racist? Or does it mean that his black English team mates are racist because the colour of their skin seems to be a pivotal factor in the collective "issue" that they have with him? John Terry's black England team mates were ok with him in the past therefore what we have learned from all of this is that you are racist regardless of your past if you use a derogatory term in the heat of the moment that includes the word "black" to insult someone with black skin. And it seems that other words that are used to add flavour to the insult don't really matter much. So John Terry's black England team mates have an issue with him but his black Chelsea team mates don't nor does his Portugues manager so I guess he must be racist on a national level but not at club level. Who knows what he is on a social level. It is all very complicated. No wonder the court case was postponed. He should employ all black council.
