Pierre Rolland won stage three of the Etoiles de Besseges, as Nacer Bouhanni surged into the overall lead ahead of Marcel Kittel.

Rolland brought home Europcar's first victory in 2012 in the 152km stage, which took in three trips up the category one Col de Treylis.

Kittel, looking to protect his overall lead after victory yesterday, was left behind early as two groups of riders broke away. Those two groups merged until around the 100km mark, but Kittel's group never caught them up.

Rolland's biggest challenge for the stage win came from French compatriot Franck Vermeulen, but he held off that challenge as the pair crossed 15 seconds ahead of the chasing bunch.

Bouhanni, who had won the opening stage, came in third to assume the overall lead, while Kittel lost several minutes to drop out of contention.
