Gretna Clash Called Off

Tue 04 Mar, 02:09 PM

Gretna's Clydesdale Bank Premier League match against Dundee United has been postponed following a second pitch inspection.

The Fir Park pitch was cleared of snow on Tuesday morning, after an initial 10am check, but was too wet at 1pm to allow the scheduled fixture to go ahead.

That meant the fixture being postponed for the second time, after efforts to have it played on Saturday also failed due to a waterlogged surface.

The clubs have been eager to get the match played, but the weather has been against them.

Snow on Monday was followed by a freezing night, and a planned 9am inspection on Tuesday morning was put back by an hour.

When that went ahead, it was decided that a second inspection would be worthwhile, but referee Brian Winter decided the pitch remained unplayable when he took a further look.

United want the game to be rearranged for Wednesday, to allow them a free weekend.

Gretna have confirmed that a new date will be fixed "in due course", and Saturday will be an option as neither side have a Scottish Cup fixture to play.

Fir Park, where Gretna are Motherwell's tenants, has been affected by the weather more than any other SPL ground in Scotland this season.

Both Gretna and Motherwell have had to rearrange several games.

Motherwell recently spent £40,000 on pitch improvements following drainage problems.

Bottom-of-the-table Gretna are set to move out of Fir Park in the summer and return to their Raydale Park home, which did not meet SPL requirements this season.

If they are relegated, as is highly likely, reports claim they could also be demoted to the Irn-Bru Second Division unless improvements to Raydale Park are carried out.
