Tyson could return to fight Holyfield again

Eurosport - Thu, 04 Mar 15:54:00 2010

Mike Tyson looks set for yet another boxing comeback with a third fight against Evander Holyfield already mooted as a possibility.

2006 Mike Tyson - 0

The former heavyweight world champion, nicknamed 'Iron Mike', will be 44 in June and has not fought since 2005 when he refused to come out for the seventh round against Kevin McBride (pictured).

He lost three of his last four fights before retirement, with Britons Danny Williams and Lennox Lewis enjoying victories over him in his final years.

However, boxing website Ringside Report is now quoting a source close to Tyson as saying: "Former promoter Don King has a tentative deal for Tyson to return to the ring in late 2010.

"The initial plan is to have Tyson-Holyfield III, but there is rumoured hesitation on the part of Iron Mike, and there is a plan B.''

Tyson lost twice to Holyfield during a seven-month period in 1996-1997, and was famously disqualified for biting Holyfield's ear in the second of those fights.

Despite now being 47, Holyfield has fought six times since Tyson was last in the ring, and lost a controversial decision to Nikolai Valuev for the WBA heavyweight title in his last fight back in December 2008.

Valuev has since lost that title to Britain's David Haye.

Holyfield is due to fight South African Frans Botha, 41, in Las Vegas on 17 April.

Tyson and Holyfield recently appeared together on the Oprah Winfrey Show and appeared to be on good terms, while Tyson is said to have lost 40lbs after making an appearance on Italy's version of 'Strictly Come Dancing'.

Tyson, who served three years in prison for rape in the early Nineties, has somewhat rebuilt his reputation thanks to an eponymous award-winning documentary about his life and also because of a popular cameo appearance in hit US comedy film 'The Hangover'.

Other potential opponents for a Tyson comeback fight that were listed by Ringside Report included former world cruiserweight champion Jean Mormeck, and the little known trio of Tony Grano, Vinny Maddalone and Derric Rossy.

  4. Its a terrible shame these guys are still fighting or considering it. mike was like him or not a truly great heavyweight and was fighting past his best from the age of 32 so for him to be contemplating this is crazy

  5. The best haevyweight was ali, but no heavyweight had the pulling power of tyson . He lit up boxing like no other. Holyfield is a truly a great warrior and a superb fighter.
With fighters like Haye around i would always pay to watch tyson and holyfield even if tthey were in their 50s.
Lennox was around at the right tme he was good but not that good.

Long live fighters like Tyson ad Holyfield.

  7. holyfield ? perhaps the best heavyweight since ali ! he fought all the best, and, despite, losing alot more in his latter years, never ever made excuses.
given the state of the heavys at the moment, holyfield could still be classed as a threat to one or two of the title holders, as for tyson, boxing does not need him, and hasn't since he dragged it down to the place it initially saved him from, the gutter!

  8. debsey5419, I love your wealth of knowledge, but bet you didn't know that Lewis's mother wouldn't let him fight Tyson during his "step in the ring and blow them away" days.
She said Tyson was too dangerous, and she didn't want to see her son hurt. She only accepted for him to fight iron Mike when she felt it was safer ie after jail.

  14. I hope Holyfield ends his carrer for good, Tyson did not want to fight Holyfield around 1988-1989 when Holyfield was the number one heavyweight contender, instead chose Bruno, Spinks and one or two others before coming unstuck by buster douglas, tyson was one of the best heavyweights ever if you can say that he was at the top of his game for about five years from around 1885-1990 but i am afraid that legacies usually last longer than five years.

I can't believe they are even thinking about a fight between Tyson & Holyfield. No one will watch this fight. Tyson lost all respite 1st for being a rapist 2nd for biting Holyfield's ear. Give it up Tyson - you're a loser!!!!!!!

  17. Once a boxer always a boxer, this has been proven beyond reasonalble doubt. How many fighters out there are you aware of who have come out of retirement for a rematch or to fight someone who wants a challenge and decided...oh well, I guess I can continue lol? Practically 85% will come back. Floyd Mayweather, Oscar Delahoya, Mike Tyson, Holyfield has retired a few times and come back lol, Danny Green(Australia), Roy Jones Jr, and rumor has it that Ricky hatton might be making a comeback...lol it's a drug..

perry197363, if you are gonna insult get YOUR facts right.........
Lewis successfully sued Tyson and received a 4 MILLION dollar settlement from Don King for avoiding a mandatory defense

  19. Also lets not forget how successful Lewis was......for those that mentioned him crowd puller or not he retired undisputed champion and he also beat everyone put in front of him (okay the only two he lost to he then went on to beat them in rematches) and how many can say that.So much so that there were rumours at the time of certain big names deliberately avoiding him!

From Debbie, on Sat 6 Mar 1:46
  20. Maybe the big screen has gone to his big head!!! I know Tyson is skint bigtime but what about the finances of Holyfield? Dont think HE is that skint..... to NEED this! And as regards post 24 maybe a sham maybe not but Holyfield totally deserved it.....Tyson was a fantastic powerhouse when he first came into the spotlight and its a pity that champions of old feel the need to have to do this and destroy the image so many people have of them!!!
