Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins has told his side they can avoid the drop ahead of Saturday's must-win clash with Sheffield Wednesday.The Iron slipped further adrift of safety with a fourth successive defeat at Leicester last Saturday to leave them on the verge of an instant return to League One.

He told the club's official website: "We are very upbeat, the lads have worked hard again this week - as they have done all season.

"I believe we can stay up, it would be against all the odds but a lot of stranger things have happened.

"We realise the situation we are in, and all we can do is control the controllables and get ready for the next game, which we are looking forward to.

"We have to win the final five games, we cannot hide away from the fact."
