Ferrari lead way in second practice

Eurosport - Sat, 04 Apr 09:44:00 2009

Kimi Raikkonen led a Ferrari one-two with Felipe Massa in second practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang.

FORMULA 1 2009 - Kimi Raikkonen of Finland races his Ferrari during the second practice session for the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang - 0

McLaren, rocked by the suspension of sporting director Dave Ryan by team principal Martin Whitmarsh, saw Lewis Hamilton finish 12th in the lists.

His English compatriot Jenson Button and Brawn GP team-mate Rubens Barrichello, who led the way in the first race of 2009 in Australia, were seventh and sixth fastest respectively.

But Barrichello will get a five-place penalty on the starting grid after his team changed his car's gearbox after practice.

The decision dealt a blow to his new team's chances of repeating their stunning one-two finish in Australia last weekend.

Under Formula One regulations, gearboxes must last four successive races. Any unscheduled change incurs a five-place penalty.

Sebastian Vettel, Williams man Nico Rosberg and Vettel's Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber were ahead of the Brawn GP pair in a 90-minute session that threatened but never delivered rain.

As a result most of the cars were on track early looking to get some laps under their belts, leading to a long and busy session.

Raikkonen laid down his pace-setting 1:35.707 with a quarter of an hour remaining, taking over from Massa.

However it was not all good news for the Scuderia as they suffered a late problem with their KERS.

BMW Sauber struggled under the dark clouds, propping up the timesheets for much of the session before Robert Kubica improved to 17th. Nick Heidfeld finished bottom in 20th.

Williams had seen Rosberg goes fastest in first practice; his fourth spot provided more evidence of their sound base while Kazuki Nakajima was eighth in the other car.

McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen and Nelson Piquet Jr of Renault followed, with the Brazilian's twice world champion colleague Fernando Alonso struggling down in 15th after only completing 20 laps due to an ear infection.

Hamilton, Toyota's Jarno Trulli, Sebastien Buemi of Toro Rosso and Timo Glock, also of Toyota, separated them.

Giancarlo Fisichella ran wide at turn 10 and collided side-on with the tyre wall, ending his session with 23 minutes left on the clock.

Gor blimey, guvornor, what have this lot at Mclaren been up to??
Dragging the sport of Formula 1 in the bleeding gutter thats what they've been up to.
I blame the blooming government I do, letting Formula 1 get this state.
No respect you see, that Hamilton he dont care about truth and lies does he, ay,ay,ay?
Do he? Nah mate, all he wants is the cash and the birds and the rest can go and jump.
Not like this in my day, I can tell ya. F1 finished now because of him and his boss, that Lez Dennis geezer.
Well, all the best guvnor, take care mate.....

  3. it would be wise to remember silverstone from a few years back when michael took his penalty in the pit lane and was allowed to thus not being slowed on his exit as he done this on the final lap. ferrari are allowed away with more than other teams but complaining now is too late as this has been going on for years. they will win it this year but red bull may be knocking at there door pretty soon.

  6. How Stupid are the Stewards,
Lewis will go down in history as the only man penalised for actually letting someone past him????
And they say F1 is becoming a joke!
Still i heard if you get a flat tyre , your moved back 10 places on the grid for the next race....
15 if you drive a Mclaren...

In fact what the hell lets go the full whack, you are only allowed to win if your car is red and you got a sponsor called fiat, and the more cash you give to the FIA (Ferrari international Assistance) the better your chances....

I bet Bernie and Max have told a little lie about anything... especially those Nazi Bondage parties Max likes..
I mean how can you you take this sport seriously with people like that running it...

  7. What gets me is, these so called Ferrari fan really do believe that Ferrari have never cheated. They have cheated for years, everyone knows it and the FIA turn a blind eye. But really has annoyed me is that Ferrari were caught red handed cheating last year with THEIR ILLEGAL FLOOR PLAN, which is CHEATING and decieving the RACE STEWARDS. If a penalty for beining docked points or even banning from racing that was the one, but for the FIA to threaten banning LH and McLaren for lying Im sorry this is a joke to far. Time for all those teams without the worlds most expensive FIAT engine to leave F1 and start a new series. This is something the teams having being threating Bernie and the FIA for a few seasons. To you Ferrari fans, if it rains on Sunday you wont be getting any points because Messup and Dimi can not driving in the rain.

Well Well Well what do we have hear then... Looks like JUSTICE is being carried out by the FIA at long last. For months marnio from peru , Marion , Potter , Touronroute , and many others have been preaching about mclaren and mr hamilton son as being cheats , looks like they were right after all. They also preached on f1 now being a farce and yet mclaren and mr hamilton son fans were quite content in allowing this to continue so as long as it benefited mclaren and mr hamilton son. We have now come to the conclusion that once found cheating in f1 you will always be looked upon as cheats. Mclaren and mr hamilton son just cant help themselves and so it continues.
FIA are now considering more action against mclaren ,, a report will follow shortly

  12. Only one Question remains then, would the punishment be the same for any other driver or team if the same mishap were to happen to them, of course no other team or driver would attempt to lie or decieve in similar circumstances, ........ Would they??? So of course the punishment would be less.. NO..

  13. Don't be so naive kvbrock82. All through last season Ferrari were bending the rules if not outright cheating, yet did they get penalised even once, of course they didn't. Ferrari get away with the @#$% they pull everytime.

I'm not condoning McLaren and Hamilton for what they did, it was pointless (one whole extra point they would have gotten) and just wrong. They've gone from 5 points to 0 for the sake of trying to get 1 more point.

I do have a problem with the way the stewards handled it though. Switching the positions back was all that was needed and probably some sort of fine for Hamilton and/or McLaren (like what happened with Red Bull). But of course (and totally unsurpsingly) they decide to disqualify him instead.

Anything to keep McLaren from getting away from Ferrari I suppose.

    SILENCE IN COURT.
The issue before the court today is the integrity of Mr Lewis Hamilton and the Mclaren F1 team.
Members of the jury, we have been here many times before have we not? And the culprits remain the same as does the issue – honesty. With boring regulatory this court has had to examine the honesty of Mr Lewis Hamilton and his Mclaren team. The saying of “no smoke without fire” comes to the court’s mind.
The continued controversy surrounding this team speaks volumes of their culpability. The damage to Formula 1 is immeasurable.
Verdict: Mclaren and Lewis Hamilton have yet again brought Formula 1 into disrepute.
Sentence: Mclaren are banned for the next 10 races.
    NEXT CASE PLEASE.

  17. Listen, the people I feel sorry for most are
    1) Mclaren and Hamilton fans - the UK has limited sport stars, and a UK sporting champion is rarer than rocking horse sh@t. Then when they get one this happens and the achievements and pride in their hero is lost.
2)Formula 1 fans in general - the sport has reached an all time low
3)Lewis Hamitlon and Mclaren - the will to win at the cost of sportsmanship is the time to give up.
    and finally
4)Mercedes, for how this shambles will rub off on them as the owner of Mclaren.
    What a mess.
Space, it is still out there.

  20. here go the mclaren fans complaining that ferrari arent being penalised for any infringements, but let me ask you this..

Why should ferrari get penalised? Mclaren get penalised because they cheat... simple. Even Hamilton said he was sorry today because the team was cheating, AGAIN.

    Thank God for Ferrari.
