Calderwood joy at Forest rise

Sun 04 May, 05:30 PM

Colin Calderwood dismissed the notion Nottingham Forest were lucky to go up after a 3-2 win over Yeovil sent them heading for the Championship.Goals by Julian Bennett, Kris Commons and Lewis McGugan all got on the score sheet to confirm Forest's place in the Championship as they clinched automatic promotion on a dramatic last day thanks to Doncaster's slip-up at Cheltenham.

Calderwood has struggled to win over the Forest fans in his two years in charge and would have faced calls for his head had his side failed to secure a place in the Championship.

He said: "I don't think we've been lucky to win promotion - the league table over the course of 46 games doesn't lie.

"The magnitude of the game and what was at stake crept up on me in the 24 hours before the game. I've always thought we were heading in the right direction but you've got to do what you've got to do. The only way to prove the doubters wrong was to go out there and try and get promotion. Taking Nottingham Forest up is an amazing feeling and the reaction of the fans was something else.

"It's almost a fairytale ending for us. It's not the greatest story in the history of this club but it's one that has made heroes of the players who were out there. I think they've got the potential to go again next season. I'm thoroughly relieved that we haven't got to go through the play-offs because my record is awful."
