Lions Can't Stand The Heat

Sun 04 May, 08:09 PM

Guildford Heat ended the season with a convincing victory in the BBL play-off finals at Birmingham's NIA, beating Milton Keynes Lions 100-88.

Heat's Danny Gilbert won the vote for the most valuable player award, scoring five three-pointers in his 27 points.

However, captain Michael Martin - who added 10 rebounds to his 25 points - and Tony Dorsey, who had 19 points and nine rebounds, also had a strong claim to the award.

Guildford were undoubtedly the best team of the weekend despite a traumatic season which saw them fail in Europe.

Although they managed to manufacture a few nervous moments for themselves in the closing minutes, their class and depth on the bench proved the decisive factor in their second final of the season.

Lions shot out of the blocks and into a 19-9 lead in the first five minutes before Yorick Williams, who had hit seven of their opening points, received two fouls - including a technical.

Heat scored all four free throws and then a basket from the added possession and used that to fuel a 14-2 run which gave them a 24-21 lead at the end of the first quarter.

That advantage was stretched to 37-30 in the second period as Milton Keynes' line-up failed to stop the smooth-running fast break the Heat had employed in their semi-final demolition of Plymouth.

Two of Lions' veterans, 38-year-old Tony Windless and 39-year-old Robert Youngblood, combined for eight points to trim the deficit to a single point at the half-time interval.

Guildford established a hold on the game in the third quarter when Dorsey hit seven points before Gilbert produced eight points, including two three-pointers, in a 10-2 run.

When Gilbert hit another three-pointer to start the final period and Martin added another, Lions were struggling to stay in touch.

A 15-2 run, studded with another three from Gilbert, brought Heat their biggest lead of the night, 83-68 with five minutes remaining.

Milton Keynes captain Dru Spinks hit a run of 10 late, defiant points - he finished a team-high 22 - and Kevin Griffin added four more to cut Guildford's lead to just seven points with 79 seconds remaining.

On the next play, Dorsey was fouled by Peter Heizer, provoking a display of dissent from Lions coach Vince Macauley, who received a technical foul.

Dorsey calmly stroked all four foul shots home to settle the match once and for all, bringing Guildford their second trophy of the season and their fourth in the last two years.
