Sunderland defender Danny Collins has warned his team-mates they cannot allow their hopes of Barclays Premier League survival to rest on a final day clash with Chelsea.
The Black Cats turned in another woeful display on the back of their 3-0 humiliation at West Brom as Everton condemned them to a ninth league defeat of the campaign at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
Collins said: "You are always hoping the teams around you will lose, and that's what happened this weekend."
He added: "West Brom and Boro lost on Saturday and we knew Newcastle's score when we started our game yesterday.
"We knew a win against Everton would just about keep us safe, but it was another flat performance and now it's looks like we're going to have to do it at Bolton and Pompey.
"We really don't want it to go into the last game against Chelsea because everyone knows how tough that will be."
Chairman Niall Quinn has big plans for the club this summer with American investor Ellis Short ready to buy out the Drumaville consortium which took over almost three years ago.
However, that will depend largely upon where the club is playing its football next season.
Sbragia, who replaced Roy Keane at the helm in December, has since seen a succession of better-known names, most recently Steve McClaren and Louis van Gaal, linked with his job.

Off to OZ for two weeks on Saturday so will (in true Joey Barton style) miss the run in,not sure if that's such a bad thing actually, those last games will be bad on my BP
still predict the bottom of the table will look like this on the last day
Sunderland
Newcastle
--------------
Hull
Middlesbr ough
WBA
Yeah watched that game too cameron some great footballing spirit shown something both our male teams lack unfortunately. However the primate in me still thinks they should play in their underwear,it would boost attendance rates also.
Jack, i always told you to keep your eye on the goal difference!
I wouldn't get too carried away either as your 'superior' goal difference of about +2 is about as safe as Collicinni's defending mate!!!
By the way, i watched the sunderland women in the F.A. Cup Final on Bank Holiday Monday mate; they put the male players to shame! They were totally outclassed but gave everything, one lass even got stretchered off with oxygen after taking a fit after one challenge. No diving, no rolling around, no backchat; just good oldfashioned honest graft! They did however have one thing in common with their male counterparts . . . . . . . .. . they got beat!
If we can pick up a point each against Portsmouth and Bolton or a win in either one that should just about be enough thanks to our camparably ok goal difference! We can't just keep hoping teams around us keep losing!
P.s Remarkably we've still got the best goal difference out of the bottom 5 teams and it could come down to that yet.
Danny Collins is about the only one in the team and defensive part of it who seems to be trying, but he cant cover the whole area by himself. Another woeful display from Messers Ferdinand and Davenprot and Bardsley. The midfield didnt fare too well either, Whitehead and Richardson werent anywhere near good enough, Grant leadbitter tries his best but again he cant do it all. and I suspect he has realised his future is lying away from Wearside and I wouldnt be supprised at all if he goes to someone like Wigan or Blackburn, or Wolves as a certain Mr McCarthy rates him quite highly.
We are in Dire trouble and excuses are not going to get us out of it, we need commitment from all the team and pride and belief in the club, supporters and Chairman who bleeds red n white .
No sh! t Sherlock,if it's down to the Chelski game they could beat us with only 7 men on the pitch
