Premier League - Video: Rooney wins top goal award
Thu, 03 May 21:14:00 2012
Wayne Rooney's spectacular overhead kick in the Manchester derby in February 2011 has been voted as the greatest goal in the 20 seasons of the Premier League.

The England forward acrobatically volleyed home Nani's 77th-minute cross to take United eight points clear of City in the league standings en route to a record 19th English league title, and the award is the first in a series to commemorate 20 seasons of the Premier League.
Hundreds of thousands of supporters across the globe voted in the poll, with Rooney's strike gaining 26 per cent of the total votes cast. Dennis Bergkamp's sublime turn and finish against Newcastle for Arsenal in March 2002 was the second most popular with 19 per cent, and Thierry Henry's volley for Arsenal against Manchester United in 2000 was third on 15 per cent.
Rooney said: "I grew up watching the Premier League so to be voted the best goal in the history of the Premier League is a great feeling.
"There's so many good goals in that shortlist, goals that I watched in my living room as a kid: Alan Shearer's goal, Paolo Di Canio's, Tony Yeboah's, David Beckham's. To be competing with them and winning is a great honour for me and something I'm very proud of. I'd like to say a big thank you to all the fans that voted for me."
Over 4.2million votes were cast by 300,000 supporters to decide the best goal, best save, best goal celebration and a fans' fantasy team. There are also six award categories being decided by a panel - best player, manager, team, season, most memorable quotes and a panel fantasy team.
The remaining award winners will be named over the next fortnight culminating in an event on May 15 where the best player and manager of the 20 seasons will be revealed.
The 20th Premier League season has featured some fantastic goals, with Wednesday's swerving strike from Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse against Chelsea arguably the pick of the 2011-12 campaign so far, coming just days after Luis Suarez's long-range chip for Liverpool against Norwich.

Well, they just suggested their minds. How can this be true?
@346 ALAN - that was in the FA Cup.
is probably the way it look in pictures with him airborne rooney is not the best but that goal was a treat for any football anywhere
Peter Crouch for Stoke City v Man City...nothing will ever top that.
for me cisse did the magic, thats the best goal, full of art/skill and focus
Personal favourite - Zola's goal against Norwich many years ago. A cheeky backheel on the volley from a corner. Never seen one like it before, or since ;)
Wayne Rooney's overhead kick against City was really a world class goal. I was really fortunate to have that goal, it just too perfect to be the best during the 20 years of the English premiership. Wayne is a fantastic player who has matured over the years, thanks to Sir Alex. Keep it up Wayne
I seem to remember there was football before 1992. Anyone remember one Bobby Charlton scored for Manure against Spurs at Old Trafford in the late 60s four or five passes topped off by a truly magnificent strike of the ball. Don't think Ive ever seen a ball hit harder and with greater accuracy especially one of the older footballs in the muddy pitches of the time. Before you all pile in I'm not a Manure fan but this was wonderful to watch.
D P not only city hate Manu..the whole world does!
who came second? we all know that anything with man u in is fixed.. so no this isnt the best goal of the prem. not whatsoever. there has been that many that it would be impossible to choose.
dosnt make any difference everyone knows the best goal ever scored in the prem was bergkamps turn and second was Henrys 3rd against liverpool in the 03/04 seson
ha ha ha ha ha uw aha ha ha ha ha ha
good goal but it actually came off his shin , but we all let him off the fact he cheated on his wife and held his club to ransom .....
Well done Rooney now you have got something that this lot on here can gripe about, plus the fact it stunned that lot of money men at City who have not got the talent to do something similar.
Who actually gets to vote on this sort of thing? Or do apanel of dimwits make it up as we go along?
BIG HEAD
Rooney, is a useless idiot. Why is he paid so much money, what does he actually do, not a great deal, I think!!
was a good goal but dont think id have it as the best in 20 yrs. dont know what competition it was in but anyone remember the Trevor Sinclair overhead kick from outside the box. Now that was class
Men, those decision makers are rediculous and highly biased, shame on them.
come on rooney's goal was a fluke..he shined it...he won it cos he plays for manure..RED77
