Hoops in hunt for Da Silva

Wed 04 Jun, 03:30 PM

Scottish Premier League giants Celtic are reportedly keen on bringing Paraguayan defender Paulo Da Silva to Parkhead.A third consecutive SPL title has confirmed the Hoops' place in the group stages of next season's UEFA Champions League and Gordon Strachan is keen to put the resulting finances to good use.

The Glasgow giants have already been linked with summer swoops for Liverpool's Harry Kewell, Middlesbrough's George Boateng and West Brom's Zoltan Gera, but have refused to narrow their search down to players already playing their football in Britain.

Having sent scouts to run the rule over potential targets appearing in the France v Paraguay friendly last weekend, tough-tackling defender Da Silva has caught their eye and the Hoops are believed to be preparing a £2million bid.

The 28-year-old is currently playing his football in Mexcio with Toluca, but admits that he would be open to a Scottish switch.

"I've always wanted to play in Europe and we hope that the negotiations move forward, with either Celtic or other teams" he said.

"I'd like to make a change and play with clubs competing for more important things."

Strachan is also in the market for a new striker and club captain Stephen McManus has urged the manager to make Georgios Samaras' loan switch from Manchester City into a permanent deal.

"Big Sami has done well here," he said.

"He is a quality player, and you always want to bring in quality players."

  3. We need to be realistic about signings, not sure about this player or that player. Celtic are not able to compete with the premier league big boys so Kewell and Samaras are potentially good signings. A free transfer and 3 Million is realistic. Hail hail

  4. Id like to see celtic get reynolds from motherwell. He is a great player and would fit in really well at celtic park. As for signing maloney, i would not welcome him back.
He turned us down and if we were to get any one back it should be petrov.

  5. I think 3 million is a bit too much for what would basically be a squad player. I'd like to have seen more of him beside Skippy last season. I just hope we don't sign Kewel.

  6. Not6 sure if big sami is the answer. We need someone who can score goals regularly and be a bit nippy.
