New Dundee United signing Scott Robertson says the chance to play in the SPL removed any doubts he had over his controversial move from Dundee. The 23-year-old has been at Dens Park since he was a teenager and was handed the honour of captaining his boyhood heroes last season.
But with the Dark Blues failing to win promotion back to the top flight, the midfielder did not have to think twice about making the short journey to Tannadice on a free transfer this summer.
He said: "It was strange coming into Tannadice - but when it comes down to it, it's all about my career.
"If it had been here or anywhere else it would have felt strange. I've been at Dundee for a long time now, so it would have been the same anywhere.
"I think it does still mean a lot to fans when players move from one club to the other - and I had a great time at Dundee; I loved every minute of it.
"But it wasn't a factor - it came down to my football career.
"I didn't think the city rivalry was that big a deal when it came down to playing First Division football or SPL football.
"The only real thing I wanted to do was play SPL football, and there was no real decision to make."
United manager Craig Levein has described Robertson as a "blank canvas", after finally signing the youngster at the third attempt - following bids when he was boss at Hearts and Leicester City.
Robertson added: "When I spoke to the manager he said he thought he could improve my game - and when I spoke to other people in the game that know him, they told me I would improve.
"Players that have worked with him said he's helped their game so much, and I would like him to do that to my game as well.
"I've served my time in the First Division and learned a lot in my time there - but I think I deserve a chance at the SPL.
"I don't expect just to come in here and get a place straightaway. I know it's going to be hard - but I'll be hoping to win a medal or trophy and push for a European place."
