Reds Closing On Dossena

Wed 04 Jun, 01:09 PM

Liverpool are on the brink of completing the £7million signing of full-back Andrea Dossena.

The 26-year-old is believed to be on Merseyside having a medical ahead of a proposed move from Udinese.

The deal has been confirmed by the player's agent, Federico Pastorello, who has been quoted in the Italian media as saying: "Everything is confirmed and we have already exchanged documents via fax. The deal is practically done."

Dossena is getting married at the weekend, but both club and player want the medical concluded and the final details of the deal settled before then.

Initially, Udinese wanted £8million for the player, but a compromise has been reached and, subject to the medical, Dossena will become Liverpool's second signing of the summer following the arrival of Swiss right-back Philipp Degen.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez will fund the move by selling John Arne Riise, with Roma now the favourites to sign the Norwegian.

Benitez will then move to try to complete the signing of Gareth Barry, with an increased offer having been made to Aston Villa that could mean the midfielder costing upwards of £15million. Peter Crouch could be used as part-exchange in the deal.

The Anfield chief is also considering formally entering the race to sign Cardiff's 17-year-old midfield star Aaron Ramsey.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton - who made a £5million bid last night - have all been given permission to talk to the Welsh youngster, who became the youngest player to appear in an FA Cup final at Wembley last month.

Liverpool made one initial inquiry but believed a deal with Manchester United was almost complete. However, it seems there is now some doubt over that, with Cardiff willing to allow the Premier League clubs to out-bid each other.

Liverpool could offer winger Paul Anderson and striker Adam Hammill as loan players to Cardiff for next season.

Anderson helped Swansea win promotion last season on a 12-month loan, and could now find himself offered to their bitter south Wales rivals for the next campaign.

  1. Come on people, lets be real, sure Torres is our best goal scorer, scoring 34 goals, but this in a team that scored 119 goals for the season. Crouch didn't put in a lot of those remainding goals. People are so fixated on having a 4-4-2 formation, that is being fazed out. This 4-2-3-1 formation is used by Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, the big teams in Spain and Italy. This formation has obviously proved to be a success with Rafa in the past with Valencia and now he has found the winning formula with Liverpool. Now he needs to buy players who will fit into that system. We don't need another world class striker, and let's face it, a world class striker will want to play regularly and Torres is top of the pecking order. What we need is a striker who is young, technically gifted and willing to bide his time, which we have in the reserves in Nemeth. We need wingers now, with talk of Queresma and Ribery, as well as English players like Bentley and Milner. Even though other "fans" may not feel the same way, in Rafa I trust and in Liverpool I trust.

  2. The problem with liverpool is that they constantly buy and sell players every single transfer windows. The consistency of the form of the team is not there, simply because they need to gel with the new players. every season he brings in 4 to 5 players, and sell existing ones. that's why they are only good in the 2nd quater of the season, where the style starts comin in.but at the end of season, he starts to sell and buy agin, and the process continues. That's why they never will achieve something higher than 4th every season.

  4. Dossena & Deggen will be useful additions to an already good squad but we need at least two more strikers to back up Torres, he is amazing but its unfair for the club to expect him to be our only goalscorer. Babel will come into his own next season once he's recovered from his unfortunate injury, maybe even as a partner for Torres, hasn't been tested yet but he was a striker in Holland so why not give it a go, he is pacy and strong after all!!

With the possible (some say expected) arrival of Gareth Barry the midfield should be well covered by him, Gerrard, Mascherano and Lucas. Not sure about loosing Alonso, i admit he's had a torrid year but he's one of the best passers in the league, and when fully fit, a great asset to the squad. In this day and age footballers need to accept the may not start every game and rotation is a part of the policy at most premiership clubs who have the depth of squad, shame he cant see that and want off to Italy....

All that said until our boardroom fiasco is settled in an adult fashion there will not be sufficient investment available to further develop the squad. We need to buy a player of Torres calibre every year to stand a fighting chance, and come on, where have all Liverpools Academy bos gone??

To compete with United, Arsenal & Chelsea we need solid, forward thinking long term investment in the squad and ground and there is no way in hell that anyone in the current financial climate would prepared to back the two numptys in charge at the moment.

I love Liverpool Football Club but feel much anger towards Rick Parry, his decision to let the club be co-owned was a recipe for disaster from the offset and why no-one else tried to prevent this from occurring i do not know, maybe its time that the backroom got its act in gear and support the club properly and put petty squabbles aside or accept defeat the pair of them and sell to DIC, at least they will have a fans voice in the club, which is the way a family club should be run!!
