Minardi calls on Ferrari to look at Alonso

Thu, 04 Jun 15:50:19 2009

Ferrari needs a more consistent and technical driver, in the form of Fernando Alonso, according to Giancarlo Minardi.

Minardi, who recommended the then rookie Spaniard to Paul Stoddart as the Australian took over his Faenza-based team at the end of 2000, believes the double world champion would do better not only than the Scuderia's Kimi Raikkonen, but also 2008 runner-up Felipe Massa.

"Ferrari needs a driver like Alonso to rise again, although I must admit that Raikkonen had a good weekend in Monaco," Minardi said.

"A Formula One driver however should be more consistent in his results. At this time Ferrari also needs to be able to blindly trust a driver in the development of its single seater.

"From the outside, Felipe and Kimi do not give me that impression," Minardi added.

Ferrari is currently a distant fourth in the constructors' championship, but speculation has normally singled out Raikkonen as the most likely to make way for an Alonso arrival, perhaps as soon as 2010.

"I have always said that Massa is an excellent driver and team player who is racing beyond his abilities, but perhaps the team needs a Schumacher or an Alonso; someone who can influence the decisions, a technical driver," said Minardi.

  1. Minardi isn't talking about Ferrari needing a "team player". What Ferrari needs is someone with the ability to sit in any car and tell the engineers how to make it better. Kimi and Felipe don't seem to be able to do that. Alonso has proven he can--he can get more out of any car than anyone else, just putting him in the Renault last year took it from nowhere to being a contender. The only current driver that comes close to him is Vettel. Kimi and Felipe are more like Nico or Jarno--good drivers but not very good at communicating with the engineers.

  2. Sorry no Alonso,so many people prefer to see inferior Ferrari drivers, that way its more interesting and the challenge is who can drive whatever car to win the championship like Schumacher did in his first 2 years.
