Former New Zealand test lock Chris Jack has poked fun at the standard of European club rugby, calling it 'easy'.
Jack, who has spent the last two seasons with English club Saracens, said he was returning home to New Zealand because he wanted to play a higher level of rugby.
"I'm not going back just to muck around. If I wanted to muck around I would have stayed up there," he said in Sydney.
"I want to come back and I want to play well. If I wanted to play easy rugby I would have stayed up in the northern hemisphere."
Jack, who is in Sydney preparing to play for the Barbarians against Australia this weekend, said he hoped his return to New Zealand would rekindle his international career.
The 30-year-old last played for the All Blacks at the 2007 World Cup in France but is eyeing a return to the test arena for the 2011 World Cup, to be held in New Zealand.
"I want to play good rugby again. I want to play challenging rugby and I want to enjoy it," he said. "The (English) premiership gets a bit tough after a while of the same sort of stuff. It's good to play some rugby that's enjoyable."

if european rugby is so poor what does that make him as he was dire to watch last season! calling himself top class is an insult to the game and the team he played in
If it was so easy how come he stayed the second year? Contract or no contract he could have gone back. I can think of a few hundred thousand reasons why he stayed! No class to take the money then slag off the rugby! He hardly shone over here either.
Jack what are you doing??
Im a Kiwi in London, and no matter what your opinion is, you keep it to yourself as a professional should.
Disappointed.
To his defence, maybe it was a more of a parting remark to the Scaracens outfit that will only employe Sth Africans
@#$%
What a @#$%!!! Didnt say anything when he was picking up his wages, mercenary sod. @#$% player anyway.
Yahoo send him these comments and tell him how much of a mercenary he is. Bets are off re his selection for New Zealand, he has got no chance. His comments about easy rugby are rubbish, surely the NZ teams know the opponants so much better because there are so few teams that to some degree it could be said it is easier in NZ.
Don't know much about this guy. Does he really look like his photo, or have the research guys looked for a picture that makes him look as dumb as his comments? If that's so - great match-up!
Seriously, I think his comments doesn't really say a lot about Northern Hemisphere rugby but does speak volumes for his lack of scruples and integrity. Let's hope he is never invited back to play here as a Barbarian - seems unlikely that he'll make the All Blacks team so therefore we can say goodbye and good riddance.
What we've got to remember is that the southern hemisphere teams play in a regional league, whereas the GPrem is a club league. In the whole of NZ they only have 5 teams, so the standard will almost certainly be better. Imagine if Wasp, Exiles, Sarries, and Quins all joined together to make a South East team - would be an awesome team. That's the kind of level that the Super 14 is. It also means that each team has a much larger fan base, money pot, investors etc. No wonder that Super 14 is better standard.
Still, if Jack was findign it so easy how come his team finished 9th out of 12. I reckon this is just backlash for being dropped by his new coaches.
Why dont the top 3 in the premiership challenge the top 3 in Super 14? Settle the Hemisphere score... Have the Settle the Score on Neutral ground.. Lets Say the United States... In TEXAS... we are desperate for some Great RUGBY!!
Cheers!
David
Jack wasn't good enough to make the starting XV of the team who lost again France and its "easy rugby"....
...and wouldn't have been called in a Northern Hemisphere "team of the season " if such a thing did exist.
Have a nice trip home, and don't let the door slap your @#$% on the way out
Perhaps he's still bitter about being knocked out of 2 world cups by a poor european team (as he says) - France.
NZ are always the best team in the world when it does not matter, when it does they bottle it and are a joke worldwide because of it.
Whats is the 7th and 8th place world cup play off called - The Bledisloe cup...ha ha
Surely 3 things need mentioning here.
1. Is he really going home to play better rugby or is more to do with the take over of Saracens and sour grapes.
2. If rugby here is so easy then why did he win NOTHING as either part of a team or as an indivdual
3. It would be interesting to see his opta stats Vs the top European Locks...
Actually Munster nearly and probably should have beaten the all blacks so how can anyone say club rugby is not as good as the southern hemisphere when one of the northern teams are capable of beating the national team!!!
If he didnt go home shouting his mouth off no one would know he was back, over rated in his own mind this one. Glad hes gone. Would say see you next time you`re in an All Black shirt but no chance off that you old has been.
2 OLD 2 HAIRY 2 FULL OF HIMSELF
Yeah, the hairy loudmouth was happy enough to take the Saracens pay check though, which is more than double what he would receive in NZ ...... Not the best player from those shores to have played here was he ? The sad ungrateful prat wont be missed .
If it was that easy how come he never won the premiership? NZ can't win the World Cup...How hilarious that the forward passers par excellence were undone by a French forward pass! Laugh? I nearly forgot to laugh at the Haka....
when is the last time the all blacks won the world cup?
when is the last time the all blacks won the world cup?
I suppose he has to say something to attract attention to the fact he's going back to NZ. At the end of the day the best time has to win it's not subjective.
