Premier League - Neill leads West Ham exodus

Eurosport - Thu, 04 Jun 13:18:00 2009

Manchester City are among the clubs rumoured to be chasing Lucas Neill's signature after the Australia defender opted to leave West Ham.

FOOTBALL Australia and West Ham captain Lucas Neill, who is set to leave the club after rejecting a one-year deal on a pay cut - 0

The Hammers made a "significant offer" to the out-of-contract full-back, 31, who was keen to secure a 12-month deal in order to take him up to next summer's World Cup in South Africa.

However, Neill, who controversially turned down an offer from Liverpool to join the London club in January 2007, rejected their proposal in order to pursue "other opportunities", according to West Ham's website.

Joining the former Blackburn player through the Upton Park exit are Diego Tristan, Lee Bowyer, Walter Lopez, Kyel Reid, Tony Stokes and Jimmy Walker.

In addition, the loans of Jan Lastuvka, Radoslav Kovac and David Di Michele have ended and will not be renewed.

Coming the other way are Calum Davenport and Julien Faubert, whose respective loan spells at Sunderland and Real Madrid have ended.

  1. Not sure how our finances stand but to make a push for Europe we need more firepower, we dont have a good depth in the team and if we suffer injuries like last year with some key players we will be patching up the team again.

  2. I agree that the exit of Tristan, Bowyer and Di Michele are due to their age.

With only Ashton and Cole, it is insufficient to play for a whole season.
Di Michele's scoring power is not good, but Tristan should be better, at least his free kick is powerful and accruate. That's what West Ham needs.

His experience can help West Ham and he should be a good sub after Ashton and Cole if his salary is not high.

  3. If this is an exodus its a shame West ham didn't have one ages ago, all players we can well do without. Tristan and DiMichele are too old and proved not to be sharp enough for most defences, Neill was ably covered by Tomkins towards the end of last season and is extremely expensive (turned down Liverpool for higher pay)Bowyer disgraced himself and has been nothing but disappointing on the pitch (promised goals from midfeild never appeared) Kovac has been nothing more than average (one good goal)and we certainly wont miss Lopez, Reid, Stokes & Walker (unfamiliar to all but the most ardent supporter). Shame we have to accomodate Faubert's return, it looked like a right result sending him to Spain, but Devenport was always reliable when he wasn't injured. Talking of injuries can Ashton return after 2 years out of the game? It would be a shame if we let him go after waiting so long for his return to form, but he looked heavy last Summer; God knows what he weighs after another season off. Let's hope its all muscle!

  4. Would like to see Tom Huddleston at West Ham (if Bolton can put in an offer surely we are a better proposition for a decent player who doesnt miss 75% of season through various injuries and back ache)and a decent striker - get what we can for Ashton, Boa Morte & Dyer could throw in a Physio table with them three, a decent full back and Central Defender wouldnt go amiss either

  5. With Gabbidon coming back, maybe Tomkins will be used at right back... I recall that he did a fine job there in a couple of games this season.

  6. def not worth that money, glen johnson would be great, but we dont have that kind of money and i doubt he would want to come to upton park! Duno how neill got the captain band!!?? Noble should have it and shud have had it since he played regularly! Hes always passionate and runs loads! Or should be parker, great player but injured alot of the time! I also think green cud give the captain band a test, he leads his back four well. Why havn't we got rid of boa morte yet???

  7. Not sure why these CFC chloroflurocarbons are still choking our atmosphere here! Its their fault we have global warming and a melt down of football! I think there's not a name on the list who is worth keeping anyway!

  10. Jimmyrice man u are champs again Where you from Jimmy definitely not a Mancunian another so called football fan with no roots, just because people are loyal to their local team and heritage you think their morons. I think people who live hundreds of miles from the team they support just because they're a rich club are cretins and if they have juvenile web names such as "Jimmyrice man u are champs again" they are truly, truly morons

  11. This is not an exodus it's simply good management, getting rid of unwanted players that are a drain on the wage bill. By doing this Zola can introduce two or three players that will be more useful to the team. The players mentioned will be joined by others before Zola and Clarke have finished getting rid of the dead wood. Hopefully a new buyer will come in and give them some money to buy players, until then they have to get rid of the surplus players in order to balance the books and make it viable to bring in fresh players. As far as authurlaws West Ham down next year, you need a check up from the neck up.

From Stephen, on Thu 4 Jun 2:36PM

  16. "exodus", more anti-west ham media. We have released 4 very old players and not offered contracts to a few youngsters, its not an exodus! just like there wasnt a "fire sale" when you lot predicted it.

From MWSSSSSSSS, on Thu 4 Jun 12:56PM
  17. Exodus???? I call it trimming off unwanted fat, I cant believe Neill was on £90,000 what we need is another good quality striker and by releasing the fringe players and on Neills wage savings alone we should be able to do that. Little bit worried about Collins going out on a loan deal as Ive read somewhere. First priorty is keeping Upson and Green, whatever Green turned down on the contract offer we need to up it to keep him. Make Upson captain and lock him in as well

From clare, on Thu 4 Jun 12:53PM

  19. Karen b comment number 22, get a life, your language is appauling and your intelligence level is lower than Drogba's diving antics.

West Ham are a class outfit with a superb acadamy and without us Chelsea would be nothing, we are the pride of London and CFC are not much better than an overated overaged pub team.

    From p.noble486, on Thu 4 Jun 12:30PM
  20. Jimmyrice man u are champs again, Didn't realise Portsmouth was in London or Kent. "Daaaaa"
People love the Hammers for good reason they supply mercenary clubs like yours with talent.
