Sunderland have appointed Steve Bruce as their new manager after he agreed to leave Premier League rivals Wigan Athletic.

"Steve will bring a professionalism and strength of character to this club that will really help to bring us forward to where we all want to be," Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn said on the club's website.

"He knows more than anyone what football means to people of this region and I'm confident he will be able to instil into our players exactly what it means to play for this football club."

The 48-year-old Bruce has signed a three-year deal and takes over from interim coach Ricky Sbragia who stood down at the end of the season after replacing Roy Keane during the campaign.

Bruce, who spent the bulk of his playing career at Manchester United, has managed Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town, Wigan twice, Crystal Palace and Birmingham City since retiring as a player in 1999.

Since joining Wigan for his second spell in 2007, Bruce has unearthed a string of talented players including Wilson Palacios, now at Tottenham Hotspur, Antonio Valencia and on-loan Egyptian striker Amr Zaki.

He guided the Lancashire club to 11th place this season, while Sunderland finished two places above the relegation zone in 16th.

His appointment is the first significant change for Sunderland since American businessman Ellis Short assumed complete control of the north-east club in May.

  1. A question for all fans.
would you be content with a manager that keeps you regularily in the top flight,eg mid table, keeps a good balance sheet,eg no debt,or would you rather a big spending type who puts the club in debt, risks relegation chasing cups and honours.ime just kind of interested.
what do the fans think about this?.Granny.

  2. Tony k...... What sort of quality you on about?? The likes of Coloccini, Duff, Ameobi,
Gutierrez, Edgar, Butt, Enrique, To name a few, These sort of players would'nt get a game for the local Sunday leauge team, Only Newcastle would be stupid enough to sign these sort of player.
I'm not saying we've got a squad of superstars, But when your struggling at the bottom of the prem there is no room for passengers,
Thats why you got relegated. Top names only come to places like Sunderland and Newcasle for stupid wages, But our great club, is not daft enough to give in to such wage demands.

  10. Tony (message 92), I've decided that I must stop laughing. So, I've turned over a new leaf and now I pity you, just like "Sunderland fan in a suit" (type that into You Tube). In fact I pity all the Doon Army and all their spat out dummies. Poor bairn, stop ya greetin and go and play with the trains. There's a canny lad.

  11. Re my last posting (88) - that should read Steve Bruce having 11 years managerial experience (of course) and not 1. I'll learn to type properly one day.

  12. 88: No, I don't want a piggin' free games console - this is a footie page, s* offski to the Ebay web-site!
Right, on with the footie talk ... Steve Bruce might not have been my first choice but clearly he was Niall's (in whom we trust) and going from the press conference Niall has had him in mind for some time (I daresay since Keono did a Keegan). Having had tiome to reflect, we should give Bruce time - let's judge him on his transfer activity and where we end up come next May (higher up the table than this season I predict). Moreover, I'm old enough to remember Stokoe being appointed and that he was not met with universal open arms given his Black and White past. Remember, he even played during their 1950's glory years as well as being a fan, at least Bruce only made the mistake of being a boyhood fan and he has twice turned down approaches to manage them - that'll do for me. Also we won the FA Cup under Stokoe and now have a statue in his honour ouside the Stadium (beside which Steve Bruce was photographed yesterday - see The Journal, Northern Echo etc. etc).
So we have a Chairman in whom we trust, an owner who makes Abramovich look small fry and a manager with 1 years managerial experience including many in the Premiership. Rejoice, don't snipe. After all The Skunks can only dream of being where we are: they're in the Championship staring down into League One, don't know who mtheir Chairman is, the Owner is trying to flog the club to any Tom @#$% or Mustafa in Dubai and Mary Poppins (with little managerial experience) is now baulking at the idea of becoming their permanent manager. Ho! Hum! What fun!! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
HAWAY THE LADS! We're On Our Way, On Our Way, In the Premier, All The Way!!

  14. one step at a time my friends.you cant rush in and expect success in the top flight.you only have to look at the top 4,they seem to hog the lot,big clubs hammer on that door spending colossal ammounts trying to break in,generally without success.survival for most is the priority.however, careful planning and a good knowledge of the game in this division will produce results,eg,if sunderland were to have saf tommorrow how long would it take to get the results.the odd big names will not buy success, you would have to purchase an entire team with its management to compete at that level.to compare eg man city/chelski.city have spent big money on the odd player whereas chelski have huge players every where at enormous cost.so i say to the cats one careful step at a time,be patient, unless you have a spare 1000m£ that is.granny

  15. Chasing the money? I remember Bruce starting life at Huddersfield and selling a number of key players to none other than Ipswich and Birmingham city who he went on the manage a year later.... I jsut hope Sunderland can bring in talented footballers with passion for the game now they have the cash to spend...

m8 you are suffering delusions of grandeur when was it Roy Keane took you from the relgation zone of the championship 3 yrs ago you almost went back down this year
you have not won anything since another geordie Bob Stoko won the FA cup in the 70ies
You are not a big club yes you have a large fan base but that does not make you a big club a sleeping giant maybe we will let you get away with that label
Give the bloke a chance he might be able to do somthing
I cant say I really balme the fans turning on keane mind you he bought some duffers to say the least

roy keane, everyone was over the moon when he arrived, dancing in the streets you were, and yes brought you some success, and then the fans, yes the fans turned on him, your vitriol forced him to move on.a manu legend.
now you have brucy, you talk up loyalty.todays game is not about that anymore.at the first sign of distress the fans turn.the players are much the same.its all about money.
every player and every manager wants to be in the top flight,if its offered they will take it.
brucy,if he is supported may well bring success to the cats,if he does there are clubs out there with open cheque books more than willing to double his pay,and that goes for the players as well.
my advice is give brucy the one season, with support you may well be surprised.good luck to you all.granny.

  19. What the hell are you all going on about. When was the last time you had a quality Manager.Your history dictates that quality Management are not attracted to the cold bleak surrounds of a SLEEPING GIANT.
How many times have we heard that.Just look over the water @ the Geordies.THEY never woke up,but will have too now.
    Give him a chance.
In reality you have no choice !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Bruce is a journeyman manager living on his reputation as a player and who is destined to 'knock on the door' for his entire managerial career. Can't imagine what he will bring to Sunderland.
