Sunderland have appointed Steve Bruce as their new manager after he agreed to leave Premier League rivals Wigan Athletic.
"Steve will bring a professionalism and strength of character to this club that will really help to bring us forward to where we all want to be," Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn said on the club's website.
"He knows more than anyone what football means to people of this region and I'm confident he will be able to instil into our players exactly what it means to play for this football club."
The 48-year-old Bruce has signed a three-year deal and takes over from interim coach Ricky Sbragia who stood down at the end of the season after replacing Roy Keane during the campaign.
Bruce, who spent the bulk of his playing career at Manchester United, has managed Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town, Wigan twice, Crystal Palace and Birmingham City since retiring as a player in 1999.
Since joining Wigan for his second spell in 2007, Bruce has unearthed a string of talented players including Wilson Palacios, now at Tottenham Hotspur, Antonio Valencia and on-loan Egyptian striker Amr Zaki.
He guided the Lancashire club to 11th place this season, while Sunderland finished two places above the relegation zone in 16th.
His appointment is the first significant change for Sunderland since American businessman Ellis Short assumed complete control of the north-east club in May.

I see a lot of Sunderland fans worried about the arrival of Steve Bruce but it seems to me he has good ability as a football manager. Sunderland fans must remember that money is the root of all football in the 21st Century and despite having a limited amount of money to spend at Wigan Bruce has done well for them. I can see Steve Bruce over the next 5 years building a squad at Sunderland that is capable of competing for a european place but lets be realistic the Premier League is the strongest in the world and it has 3 distinct tiers - Sunderland are in the bottom tier. You should be very happy to have one of the few quality English managers and a canny businessman s the club's owner. It doesn't guarantee success but it sure as hell helps.
all I hear is WIGAN on here about Bruce.... for criysss sake this is SUNDERLAND were talking about here - Wigan compared to the MIGHTY Sunderland it does NOT compute.... fan base alone is 2-1, quality and expectation takes that to 5-1... at least.... we shoulda gone for Jose Morinio, don't settle for second best.... remember Laurie "Mc Bastardtwatting"Menomie!¬.... GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRARRRRAARRRAAGH.... there's a guy just like.... oh hang on....... yep Steve Bruce.....! here today gone tommorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.. ....
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!.....
just what we don't want!.... a manager that flits from team to team with no passion nor understanding.... championship 2009/10 then....
really disappointed
i love the fact they all say he found palacios when he was on our books at arsenal and wenger told him to buy him as he wud be good in time,, the guy is useless to be honest,, all my family come from wigan and we know he aint the right man,, yes whelan is a @#$% @#$% that thinks cash only but it needs a manager that will give his soul to the club like coppell did at reading or fergie and arsene,, not new manager each season it will ruin the club and i hope wigan stay up
He made a big mess of things at Huddersfield, bought players & paid them big wages for a small club. Players who it was obvious were not team players but only came for the cash, always injured and when it didn't work ot for him, he left leaving Huddersfield in big debt.
It was good riddance from the terriers - didn't he go on to manage a scottish club for a while? no mention of that in the above write up about him.
as i seem 2 remember bruce woz under contract at brum when wigan poached him just as there nxt manager will be under contract he without sin cast the 1st stone
let's see, what's wigan planning on doing right now, they sold Wilson Palacios to @#$%, i mean Spurs, then they're planning to sell Antonio Valencia to either Real Madrid or Man. Utd. Your owner is scuttling a good ship known as Wigan, Steve Bruce wanted to build a strong, and a transfer kitty of 200m sound too good to turn down
STEVE SELL YOUR SOUL TO SATAN!!! why dont you. As a Wigan fan - Thanks for coming. You'll want to come back after next when safc are in campionship! Hope Dave Whelan's learned his lession and appoints a manager with a bit of staying power and loyalty!
When I heard Steve Bruce was in the running for the job I wasn't overly enthusiastic - purely down to the newcastle link. But, with the exception of a relegation with Birmingham, his record is good.
He's proven to be shrewd in the transfer market and knows how to bring out performances from his players too. Who thought Titus Bramble could play football? At newcastle he was nothing short of hilarious.
It'll be interesting to see what he can do with a decent budget.
So being an eternal optimist, ie, a football supporter, I am looking forward to the new season. Lets not knock him before he has even started the job, lets support him.
why? no bigger than wigan who have more understanding chairman. bad move
So much for getting a big name manager, Steve, never won anything, Bruce. Two seasons after he loyally left Birmingham for a bigger pay cheque they get promoted, I will give him till Christmas before he gets the sack.
Bruce sounds just about right to me. Not a bad appointment.
donney needs to learn to talk before he can pass comments no one with any brains can understand him , he obviously knows nowt about football, or anything else for that matter
Hey, Donny Darko, do you actually think that anybody gives a ?
Missed the boat there Newcastle, good steady manager, Shearer could have learnt his trade with him
Cant see em in top half? I can, in the Championship.
THASH WAS A RABBASH APINTMONT FAE SANDERAND.
sandi you may be right about loyalty...but through all of them teams there was no money to spend,we have a big club and i thimk he can take us to our next level....roll on next season
Sunderland is a fine club, with the best supporters in this fine country.
Bruce needs to get rid of the Prima Donnas, and fill the team with Men from the NE, who are proud to wear that famous shirt !
I have supported Sunderland for 65 years although I left that area in 1950, and now live near Manchester. Lads of my age supported all the NE sides, and many famous footballers played for Newcastle, Sunderland and Middleborough in their careers - all recruited from the mining villages, shipyard towns and local steel works.
Don Revie lived next door to my parents when playing for Sunderland !!
I wish Bruce well, and hope he and Nial Quinn restore that famous club to all it's past glory.
Good luck !
