Sunderland have appointed Steve Bruce as their new manager after he agreed to leave Premier League rivals Wigan Athletic.
"Steve will bring a professionalism and strength of character to this club that will really help to bring us forward to where we all want to be," Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn said on the club's website.
"He knows more than anyone what football means to people of this region and I'm confident he will be able to instil into our players exactly what it means to play for this football club."
The 48-year-old Bruce has signed a three-year deal and takes over from interim coach Ricky Sbragia who stood down at the end of the season after replacing Roy Keane during the campaign.
Bruce, who spent the bulk of his playing career at Manchester United, has managed Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town, Wigan twice, Crystal Palace and Birmingham City since retiring as a player in 1999.
Since joining Wigan for his second spell in 2007, Bruce has unearthed a string of talented players including Wilson Palacios, now at Tottenham Hotspur, Antonio Valencia and on-loan Egyptian striker Amr Zaki.
He guided the Lancashire club to 11th place this season, while Sunderland finished two places above the relegation zone in 16th.
His appointment is the first significant change for Sunderland since American businessman Ellis Short assumed complete control of the north-east club in May.

What bothers me more about this move is that Bruce has managed Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town, Wigan twice, Crystal Palace and Birmingham City since retiring as a player in 1999. Where is his loyalty? Do you really see him managing Sunderland any longer than he did the other clubs he was at? I say, NO WAY!
choose man utd, choose 7 failed attempts at the european cup, choose to be knocked out of europe 5 times in 5 seasons, choose to waste countless millions, choose to support a team from a city u have never been to,choose whingeing, choose to wear s h i t grey shirts then blame them when southampton put 6 past u,choose to release cantona because he is the only 1 who recognises how s h i t cole is,choose not to condemn ur player after he has been convicted of assault, choose to spend ur career in the reserves cause the money is good, choose a psychopahic irishman for ur captain and call him a gifted visionary, choose the arrogance to field ur reserve team and then bleat about the consequences, choose a racist albino with pink eyes and a red noseas ur goalkeeper, choose not to be liked by anyone then pretend not to care, choose ur own referee and assistants except in europe, choose a scandinavian paperboy as ur top goalscorer, choose to have the biggest squad in football then complain about injuries, choose ur club b4 country, choose wales b4 england, choose to be a r s e licked by the media then accuse them of anti man u bias, choose to forget 1969-1993 never existed, choose to change a team u support every 10 yrs, choose to shield ur players from interviews till they can read and write, choose to change ur kit twice a season, choose to be snubbed by every decent player around the world then pretend u didnt want them anyway, choose self deceptions and delusions of grandure, choose ur best players an incohherent wife beating irishman, choose to sign a world class centre forward beginning with sh and pretend not to care when u get sheringham instead of shearer, choose embarrasment when it matters in finals, choose to live in deprived poverty, choose man utd,if ur a man utd fan and took offence GOOD.
comments 1 and 2 is far from been amusing tony k they are sick twats . WE dont need on our football site we have banter tony but this @#$% is more than disgraceful THEY CANNOT GET LOWER WHO EVER THEY ARE THEY ARE NOT SAFC OR NUFC SURPORTERS WE STAND TOGETHER ON THIS ONE TONY K LETS NOT MAKE A HABBIT OF AGREEING WE MIGHT START LIKING EACHOTHER.
So that is Sunderlands dynamic leap into the future!
Just proves the powers that be have no imagination,no beleif,no desire..and above all no ambition!!!!!
I loved Steve Bruce as a player..
But as a manager..strictly third rate..hate to say it but::::
The Sunderlands of this world..have a big enough job on there hands trying to keep on the same field as the Big-Boys!!
They needed someone with good Track record..and from Europe..we do not have any good managers here..
Sunderland Fans deserve better than this!!!
Bad move by Brucey
MANC C**T
how can bruce be a platform for big things he jumps ship every few months? the man has no loyalty towards any club he manages
all the pointers are up for sunderland, now you have bruce, and rich backers, its all there for you to do,a can see serious challenges from sunderland this coming season, wish you all well and will be watching with interest, you have the makings of a great club.goodluck. granny.!
are macs mad the most unloyal manager in football i thought they were going for someone who could take them forward he'll be at HULL NEXT XMAS wow you've really landed a big name manager good for you naill and i though you lacked courage and conviction All the best i think you will need it could be another long season
deffo wouldn't want hughes he struggled to get results at man city with all that money
well lets see what happens
Having taken Wigan as far as they can go, it makes sense for Bruce to take a really big job. In life people generally try to improve themselves by seeking promotion...its odd that we expect football managers to loyally stay put especially when chairmen are inclined to showing no loyalty whatsoever...good luck Steve, hope you bring Sunderland in one place below Wolves (somewhere around 6th... ;-).
its normal to see how a person does before you pull them to bits
bruce has had more culbs than tonny docherty, can't see us moving that far forward. hope am wrong!
Steve Bruce is definitely NOT the one! It6 should have been Sparky Hughs! S'land should have bought him out of Mam C no matter what it cost----Bruce won't see Christmas at S'land---believe me!
headlines-2009/2010 season (Cristmas) STEVE BRUCE MOVES FROM SUNDERLAND TO TAKE MANAGERS JOB AT MIDDLESBROUGH-or wherever!
Steve!-stay on your ???? ars/ for a while!!!
Question : How many ex Man Utd players have made successful managers? You all know the answer to that.
Hard luck agaian on Weirside. You wouldn't like a tubby petulant Spaniard next time round would you?
We've had Benitez at Anfield long enough.
liverpool forever all become lfc
cannot make it up...quote
" Steve will bring a professionalism and strength of character to this club that will really help to bring us forward to where we all want to be," Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn said on the club's website.,i suppose Quinn and Brucie will get on fine as long as Bruce can get past the 3 year itch
K.R.O
Just to put afew people in the picture (In the real world) We didnt turn Down Manncinni he wasnt interested in coming to S/land. Can anyone blame him leaving sunny Italy to come to sunny Seaburn I dont think so in a million years.
Bruce is not my first choice but he may proove me wrong(hopefully) and as the previous poster said Stokoe was a geordie and he was the saviour of our club, he was and is the real messiah , not an imposterr like K Keegan.
So I will be be giving him the opportunity to put hs money where his mouth is and see what he can produce.
