Sunderland have appointed Steve Bruce as their new manager after he agreed to leave Premier League rivals Wigan Athletic.

"Steve will bring a professionalism and strength of character to this club that will really help to bring us forward to where we all want to be," Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn said on the club's website.

"He knows more than anyone what football means to people of this region and I'm confident he will be able to instil into our players exactly what it means to play for this football club."

The 48-year-old Bruce has signed a three-year deal and takes over from interim coach Ricky Sbragia who stood down at the end of the season after replacing Roy Keane during the campaign.

Bruce, who spent the bulk of his playing career at Manchester United, has managed Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town, Wigan twice, Crystal Palace and Birmingham City since retiring as a player in 1999.

Since joining Wigan for his second spell in 2007, Bruce has unearthed a string of talented players including Wilson Palacios, now at Tottenham Hotspur, Antonio Valencia and on-loan Egyptian striker Amr Zaki.

He guided the Lancashire club to 11th place this season, while Sunderland finished two places above the relegation zone in 16th.

His appointment is the first significant change for Sunderland since American businessman Ellis Short assumed complete control of the north-east club in May.

  6. You have signed the most dis-loyal man in football you cant win only he can if you are rubbish under him he will be sacked with a big pay off and walk into another job start to do well and another club looks interested he will jump ship and walk into another job. Its no wonder there are no loyal players with managers like him as role models

The sooner you realise this the sooner the healing can start. I suppose the face that you couldnt beat the might SAFC last season probably didnt help lmao :-)

  15. ok, so he's a geordie, and not a 'big name', but there's no way i'm gonna be down on this - 200 million, or whatever the american bloke has got, waiting in the wings, the best chairman in the league, the best fans in the league (seventh in the attendance ratings last year, and we finished seventh bottom!!!), one of the best stadiums, and a core of strong players (jones, collins, ferdinand, richardson sometimes, two 1st class keepers). I won't be singing brucie's name, but i'm right behind the club. top ten finish, no worries - i mean look what he did at wigan with no cash, no fans, no 'history', etc... oh, and please can the mags on here wait until they actually have a manager (and i mean one with more than eight games' experience - won one, lost five, drawn two hahahahahah) and a chairman (i mean one who actually wants to be the chairman) before they post again. i just can't take your comments seriously. predictions - safc top ten finish, good cup run... nufc - relegation, turmoil, acrimony, smashed up telephone boxes etc etc

  17. Baby steps for Sunderland, we are not gonna turn into a top 6 club by appointing one manager, Bruce should have a stabalising influence on the squad and i can see him taking us to top 10 thanks to having proven premier league experience. Also i can't see him going crazy in the transfer market like Roy Keane did which will be a good thing for stability and team spirit! Just please don't Bring Titar5e Shambles in!!!

  19. Michael T, I hope you and I are both incorrect in our thoughts and we have to eat humble pie by the end of next season. Did we really turn down Mancini as manager ? 3 league titles on the trot- champions league experience- Players do follow managers and I know which set I would like at Sunderland - Will Bruce be able to draw in top quality players?
To Nail: - We seem to jump in with both feet- lets make sure when we buy players they are significantly better than what we have, otherwise another 60m while have gone into keeping us just above the relegation battle - which is unfortunately my prediction. Sorry Mr Bruce if you read this, - but we will still support you, its just that to be a top club you do need to have a 'top class manager' If the mangers job at any of the top 4 clubs (Man U, Ars, Chel, Liver) came up would Bruce be in with a chance ? No - you needed to spend some of that 'war chest' on the best you can, then and only then will you get the best footballers may be, being persuaded to move up north
    Keith

  20. Initially I was disappointed with the appointment as Bruce wasn't the BIG name I was expecting but I'm coming round to the idea. He's done a decent job at Wigan with not much money, he has a good scouting network and has made some decent signings. With the wedge of money behind him and the support of the board he could take us onto the next level. Him being a Geordie doesn't bother me, Bob Stokoe was a Geordie and he won us the FA Cup. Us Sunderland fans need to be realistic, we have just avoided relegation over the last 2 seasons and aren't a big/top club (YET), yes we have the foundations of a big club (high crowds/supportive board/great stadium and training ground etc) but this doesn't automatically make us a success, the foundations are laid we just have to do the business on the pitch, hopefully Bruce will bring us the stability we need and move us up the ranks, then we can start believe we are a big club.
