Barry eyes silverware with City

Thu, 04 Jun 11:29:26 2009

Gareth Barry is convinced he can finally win major honours after making the £12 million switch from Aston Villa to Manchester City.

Barry admits his "one huge regret" about his 12 years at Villa was failing to land any silverware with a 2000 FA Cup final appearance the nearest he came to trophy glory.

But the England midfielder believes he can achieve those goals at Eastlands even though he has sacrificed his ambition to play Champions League football for at least one more season.

Barry said: "My one huge regret is that during my time at Aston Villa we have not brought the supporters the success they deserve.

"I obviously have to take my share of responsibility that we have not been good enough to win trophies.

"A lot of people will question my decision to join Manchester City. But they were the club prepared to meet the valuation which, for a 28-year-old with a year left on his contract, I think shows how much they wanted me."

  1. I think Sick of it all is not aware fergie has been at man u since 1986 .. not 1992. muppet.

Chelsea were there and there abouts for a few years but Mega money was needed to outspend man u and win the title.
Blackburn 1995 spent massive 92,93,94 check it out.

Arsenal spend next to nowt for 4 years -- watch them slide

  2. sick of it all - buying the title and honours is a fact.
Your list of purchases with plenty omitted prove it to be the case.

Buy the best players = winning cups

Before the 92 season Fergie had bought 2 entire teams and replaced them.
    You have no argument

  3. Paul g: Man U won their first EPL throphy under SAF on a budget. They only then spent a huge fee on Cantona from Leeds for the 92/93 season (the start of the EPL). That was then their biggest spending - one player, and SAF worked with his youngsters (the so called fergie fledglings) and more senior players that were already there. Everyone said Man U was going to loose blah blah blah, but SAF proved them wrong with a first place finish. It is from here, that he used the winnings of the EPL to buy more and more players, NOT from the chairman's pockets, or in Man C's case the sale of increased oil prices that the world consumers has to bear.

11 Premier League throphies in 17 season.

Man U players of 92/93 season:
    Schmeichel - there since 91
    Irwin - there since 90
    Bruce - there since 87
    Pallister - there since 89
    Parker - there since 91
    Kanchelskis - there since 91
    Giggs - Youngster
    Ince - there since 89
Cantona - bought for 92/93 season (star price in those days - comparable to Robinho's price now)
    McClair - there since 87
Hughes - came back in 88

Man U and SAF won the league 4 times in the first 5 years, something that even Hughes cannot do - as a manager (not with Blackburn then and not with Man C now) beside other honours. So that is what I mean when I say you cannot buy honours, its the manager's talent of getting the team winning that Man C is missing and will never become a top team because GREAT MANAGERS - like SAF, Wegner, Martin O'Neil, David Moyes, etc just to name a few - DO NOT WORK for money, they work for honours and respect, something Man C's Arab Camel owners cannot seem to give the team.

I never mentioned any other winners because it IS a fact they buy their honours. As long as Man C can match Man U in winning the same way they have done during the first 5 years of the EPL, everyone would say that MAN C doesn't buy honours, they earn them.

Not a Man U suppoter, but I do respect SAF's talent

  5. and why not? Your attitude is thwarted by the facts

Man United have bought all their trophies [look at how much they have spent with Fergie]
    Chelsea did recently
    Arsenal before them
    Blackburn in the 90's

Teams who win cups have bought specatulary in order to do so.

  6. Man C can buy any players with the money they have, but they cannot buy HONOURS!!!

  7. Should have stayed at Villa, we've got as much chance as City have of winning something next year. He could well look back at this in 12 months with deep regret that he left when he did.

  8. Man C??? Whos tat??? haha, oh right, its the world's ricehst club who spent the most on transfers last season but can't even qualify for Europe... all this after signing Robinho and the other big names... still ended up 10th in the league... up your fundamentalist camels' a*~e...

  9. He remembers the emotional roller-coaster with Liverpool.Let`s hope the villa find a world class midfielder with the skill and determination to lift the young team.

  10. Think you'll find that City is the true Manchester team kfallon_2005, Utd are Safordian imposters.

  11. Big names, big stars doesn't automatically mean trophies - ask Arsenal, ask Newcastle.
City haven't come close to winning anything for a very long time... waiting for an offer from someone like Arsenal or Everton would have been ideal for him... even Spurs who have finished 5th twice and 8th, along with 2 consecutive Cup Finals (and one win) would have been a better option for him than Man City - who could well qualify for Europe next season, but I can't see them being consistent enough to win a trophy just yet.
They have too many 'under-performers' and even with new blood in the summer, they'll have to re-gel as a team... AGAIN!
I don't think Barry's greedy, I just think he was too quick to jump at the first offer on the table. I can understand him being fed up and wanting a change of direction though, after a year of constant speculation and criticism.

  12. Does he ever shut up. Trying to justify why he left Villa for Citeh.
    Simple answer is MONEY. GREED.
