Steve Bruce is relishing the chance to sell Sunderland to prospective signings as a club at which they can achieve their dreams.
The 48-year-old has more than served his apprenticeship in management at clubs where he did not necessarily have the financial clout to compete with the big boys.
He freely admits there is a chasm, both on and off the pitch, between the Barclays Premier League's perennial top four and the rest.
However, having taken Wigan to within touching distance of the top half of the table last season despite having to sell Emile Heskey and Wilson Palacios in January, he is thrilled at the chance to build a side with the backing of new owner Ellis Short's money and without the need to cash in on his most influential performers.
Bruce said: "With this club, they can manage to hold on to their players - at Wigan, I sold them the dream of using the club as a stepping stone.
"At this one, you have to be established, you have to have a bit about you to play here because of the demand, the expectation and the support, so you have to have a mentality, which I will obviously try to bring to the team."

Fecking Airports !!!!
A geordie once told me, the day Sunderland are in the premiership and Newcastle aren't is the day pigs will fly......and in 2009, Swine Flu!!
Airports !!! Airports!!! has it really come to this?
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! impact, you really are a very sad man. Also, can you identify stories and comment numbers I have been on at the SAFC site for the readers on here to see what your point is. Can't can you, so does that mean you are a liar or just talking your usual boring boring pointless useless shyte.and do you realise ime really upset about all this me and cameron hutch and carl have decided not to support nufc anymore and will refuse to go to any matches, and we apologies to SAFC for going on their site and beg forgivness from a superior and bigger premiership club, connolly.
have you all got your season tickets for the coming season, premiership wages for championship football, sponsorship curtesy pizzahut,me thinks nufc are staring down the barrel of league one, what a story this is,has certainly put newcastle on the map,oh and the airport,oh and its not finished yet, lots more to come, better than coron, you could make some cash making a soap for tv,comedy of course,i have some home grown potential stars for you all,let me introduce, Cameron, connolly 2ns,and yes rabbit hutch.they have been instrumental between them in making nufc the laughing stock of the n/e.
whoe,s got the longest airport runway sunderland or newcastle, and who has the most planes?.who has the most pizza,s huts and kentucky, this is a normal phsycological reaction to your team being relegated, youll,e get over it.
Don't forget you dopey black & whites also have a phone box that you can destroy if results don't go your way!!!
p.s for information purposes only Houghton airport is clearly the best in the NE
Airports !!! Airports!!! has it really come to this? who gives a flying fark who has an airport and where they are situated? come on lads, reality check here. Teeside airport is about as big as my garden,no-one claiming it?,or is it too small? or not near enough to anywhere?S"!t let's talk about rugby even, rather than airports,it's marginaly more interesting.
if i had the wings of a sparrow .
and i had the arse of a crow.
i would fly over ST.James's tomorrow
and @#$% on the arse hole's below.
below
come on Sunderland lets have our best season yet .
scott,
Never heard so much RUBBISH in all my life you buffoon!
Sir melvin post 10:- Did you do your home work, Newcastle Airport is part owned by Sunderland City Council, They have a 35% ownership of the ground its built on, That is why Nissan got build in Sunderland, It was wrote into the deeds and contract before the plans were even drawn up for Nissan. Nissan was built on Sunderland Airport which is actually in sunderland. Unlike your so called Newcastle Airport, Of what is being held back from expanding and creating much needed jobs, By one of your local Hero's and the rest of his neibours. Mr Alan Shearer himself.
For the attention of sr. melvin.... It seems to me that all shitholes have airports. It helps the people to escape them quicker!!! (Newcastle Birmingham, and the biggest shithole of all has three...LONDON
Sr. Melvin. Your absolutely right, Newcastle Airport is right in the heart of the city isn't it? Ha, ha. As for our plyers going abroard and causing problems, well that's truly funny, players such as Joey Barton or that rapist Kieron Dyer or that racist thug Lee Bowyer you mean? You may have an airport but we have a Premiership club. We can use the airport to travel to the big clubs we play in London. will you be able to use it to get to Scunthorpe you cretin?
AMSTERDAM PRE SEASON. AYE, AND THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT WILL BE FULL OF LITTLE PRIKZ. THOSE ATTRACTIVE DUTCH PEOPLE WILL BE THINKING THAT THEIR CITY HAS BEEN TAKEN OVER BY THE UGLY PEOPLE. BY THE WAY. YOU CAN GET TO AMSTERDAM FROM NEWCASTLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. WE, UNLIKE YOU MUGS, HAVE AN AIRPORT.
Things are looking up. Everything I've seen on TV and in read in the sports pages convinces me Quiiny knew waht he was doing in chasing after and signing Steve Bruce. Good times are on their way, on their way, in the Premier, all the way.
And as a bonus it has realy upset the Skunks! You've got to pity them ...
He's only a poor little Magpie,
His feathers all tattered and torn,
His team's down and out, spat his dummy out,
He wishes he hadn't been born!
brucy,
this is a good appointment for cats,he may be a journey man as previously described, but, his experience will be invaluable for the next stage up for sunderland,it is inevitable that should success come calling, that other clubs will want brucy, its not about loyalty its about success, ime sure brucy will improve sunderland immeasurably, and yes you may well lose him after one or two seasons,so i say to the fans dont expect miracles it may take a good few seasons to break into that elite bunch, unless you have a £1000mill to spare.you can buy success, but how much more satisfying to gain it by sheer commitment and willingness and support from everyone.its not about a single manager or player or individual. Its a collective effort from the top right down to the fans.from what i have read the management are commited to your cause, you were blessed with luck last season, spragia did a great job and must be credited for realising he could not achieve these aims, when the going got tough unlike keegan, keane,he took it on the chin.the reprieve you have been given must not be wasted. good luck to the cats.
heyup tony k 5
shearer new that, thats why he took the job, easy money no come backs, like taking sweets from a baby.the toon believed, just because it was shearer, mind blowing dont you think, did you notice he wasnt booked as a caretaker manager,no straight in full blown jobby, makes you wonder whoes in control at newcy, its certainly not ashley,he took advice from those cretins in the boardroom, pit of snakes.
no its not u averaged just under a point a game until shearer took over if u had averaged that in ur last 8 games u would of ended up with 36 points and safety he managed only just over half a point a game even though some of ur better players had returned from injury appointing dowie was a big mistake. i think he thought he could just wave his magic unbrella and fly u to safety. don't forget he got 100k a game nearly as much as owen did, 800k for 5 points good money if u can get it
kettle calling the pots black tony ur fans have turned on most of ur managers lately the only ones they havn't are sir bobby (the best) and the two worst keegan the quitter and shearer
AH BRUCE ALL THE WAY A THINK IF THE FANS LET HIM DO HIS JOB WE WILL @#$% ON TOP......... @#$% ON BRUCE"Y TAKE SUNDERLAND TO THE NEXT STAGE
