Norwich director Michael Foulger has pleaded with season ticket holders to not claim a rebate they are due - and has promised to match the money raised out of his own pocket.
The Canaries could lose up to £1million if supporters who renewed before a deadline claim a 20% rebate they were promised if the club were relegated, but Foulger wants them to consider City's ambitions.
He told the official website: "Every fan is perfectly entitled to claim their rebate and we offer our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all of our season ticket holders.
"But if my fellow fans can join me in making this extra gesture of support in tough economic times it will make a substantial difference to the strength of the playing squad Bryan Gunn can assemble.
"I will match every pound not claimed, effectively doubling the injection of cash into the club. Every penny of this money will go toward the budget for the playing squad."
