Romeu backs Torres to shine in Euros

Mon, 04 Jun 14:59:03 2012

Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu believes his team-mate Fernando Torres will be a key player for Spain at the European Championship despite enduring a difficult season with the Champions League winners.

Torres, who cost the London club £50million when he was signed from Liverpool in January last year, scored just 11 goals in 48 appearances at club level this season but is expected to start when Spain begin the defence of their European crown against Italy on Saturday.

However, Romeu thinks his experience of the big occasions and work rate could prove vital for the world champions.

He told Marca: "I think Torres will be a very important player for the national team at the Euros because he is a player with great quality and experience and these characteristics are very important in a forward.

"He is very important for Chelsea too. You only have to look at how the fans love him and chant his name whilst he is also loved amongst the players and directors at the club."

  2. ↓ What are you on about? Romeu played well the games he did play last season. It wouldn't be the first time Barca made the mistake of letting a quality youngster go (think Fabregas), and they must believe he's a good prospect seeing as there's a buy back clause in his contract. Youngsters are gonna get loaned out, they aren't just going to break straight in to the first team, what's the rush?

  4. Exactly john, the only reason his form hasnt been questioned a great deal this season is because chelsea have been excellent and won the champions league so hes got away with playing badly.

  5. Torres does not have any right to start the euro's after the seasons he's had. Negrado, Soldado, Pedro... These players deserve their chance. If Spain play Torres then I hope they fail badly in the Euro's.
