And now Genoa - who won promotion to Serie A by finishing third last season - want to lure the former Ascoli player back up north in a bid to shore up their defence for the forthcoming season.
"Up front we can count on quality from Marco Borriello, Papa Waigo and Luciano Figueroa [to back up Marco Di Vaio and Adailton]," Genoa president Enrico Preziosi told Radio Incontro.
"But we need to reinforce the defence and that's why we've been tracking Barzagli and [Lazio defender] Gennaro Stendardo.
Genoa may also be able to use their own defender Domenico Criscito, who spent the last campaign at Juventus who part-own the player, but that depends on whether Juventus buy a top defender as planned.
Criscito could come back here," he speculated.
"But it depends on if, for example, Gabriel Milito signs for Juventus."
