Van Bommel set for Dutch return

Fri 04 Jul, 04:15 PM

Mark van Bommel has put himself back in contention for international duty with Holland following Marco van Basten's exit from the hotseat. The Bayern Munich midfielder had refused to represent his country under former boss van Basten, but with the legendary striker having stepped down from his post at the end of Euro 2008 the path has now been cleared for his return.

Van Bommel will be hopeful of adding to the 40 caps he has already earned over the next few years as Van Basten's successor in the national hot-seat is Bert van Marwijk, his father-in-law.

The 31-year-old admits that the situation has worked in his favour and is excited by the prospect of representing the Oranje once again.

"I always said that I would want to come back, if Marco left," he said,

"Now he has gone, and coincidentally my father-in-law is the new coach, if he needs me, I am there."

The former Barcelona man could also be about to receive welcome news on a domestic level, with rumours suggesting that he is Jurgen Klinsmann's preferred choice to inherit the captain's armband at Bayern following the retirement of Oliver Kahn.

"That is not my goal," said the Dutchman.

"If the coach says that I am to make it and the crew accepts, I will do it gladly."

  1. He is an over the hill 31 old mediocre player with a bad attitude. He has no chance to play for Holland with so many younger and more talented players sitting on the bench !!
