Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink has gone to the PFA for support in the dispute with Cardiff City over his right to a new contract.

The former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid striker claims he is entitled to a new deal after playing the requisite number of matches set out in his contract with the Bluebirds when he joined them in August 2007.

However, Cardiff claim that the 36-year-old - who appeared 44 times for the club, scoring on nine occasions - verbally waived the clause.

PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor lent Hasselbaink his support, and said: "When there is a dispute, you refer to what is down on paper in the contract.

"If he played a certain number of games, his contract would kick in for another year.

"It's clearly an unsatisfactory situation we've got."

Taylor confirmed that he would meet with Cardiff in order to reach a resolution without legal proceedings.

"I've spoken to Peter Ridsdale (pictured, right, with Hasselbaink) and we are looking to resolve the situation around the table without having to resort to a process of law either in football or in the courts.

"You can't force a club to have a player, but if they don't want him, they should make adequate compensation towards him for that contract."

Hasselbaink said in a statement on Wednesday: "I am very shocked and disappointed at the current situation.

"Following discussions with my legal team, I'm unable to comment further at this time."
