Steven Taylor has handed Newcastle caretaker-manager Chris Hughton a boost by returning for pre-season training fit and well.
The 22-year-old was due to captain England at the European Under-21s Championships in Sweden earlier this month, but had to withdraw with an Achilles problem.
Young striker Andy Carroll ended last season in the treatment room with an ankle injury, while Obafemi Martins underwent hernia surgery during the summer.
Hughton told the club's official website: "Steven is fine and is training with the main group.
"Andy is training, but is working on a different programme for this first week or so, as is Oba Martins. But they are out on the training pitch and certainly working hard."

cameron don't think much of bent either but he did score about 14goals last season and may fit the style of play bruce wants
Heslop, Doyle is way, way better than that waster Bent.
dont think sol campbell will join newcastle its now a chapionship club,,,,,owen joins man untd,,,ananda krishnan wants to buy the club? and JKs on his way back, great times at the toon eh lads....
cameron we didn't even want doyle it was just paper talk why would we want him he's a championship player he couldn't hack it in the big league last time it will be the same this time
He runs up a canny set of curtains mind! Keep him. He's a Geordie with black and white blood. Get somebody with experience to partner him at the back, Sol Campbell would be perfect, and watch him grow. He has flaws, like Andy Murray, but one day he'll be playing for the England team. I HOPE THIS FELLA, ANANDA KRISHNAN, IS THE MAN WHO'S BUYING OUT THE BULL $HIT BILLIONAIRE. HE'S WORTH A REPUTED 4.5 B. ANNY KRISHNAN. ANNY KRISHNAN. ANNY KRISHNAN. ALAN SHEARER
Posts 10 & 11: your talking rubbish and you know it. The rest of the team let Newcastle down because they were not interested. Taylor at least showed he had the guts to try.
Your talking @#$%!
oh good something about newcastle and not that little @$%^ owen.
northeastirene
Wrong!
no comment 10... newcastle need good, COMMITED, LOYAL players. taylor is all of the above. he hasa had a @#$% season because the rest of his team werent commited and did not care if newcastle went down. his blood runs black and white.
and just for the record, even if he did only save A POINT, a point would hav saved newcastle...
He's one of the reasons we got relegated ! Cash in on him if anyone's daft enough to buy him !
We need to get rid of second rate players like this...thats why we're in the Championship...he may be local but he's no good...and a diver too...saved us a point against Sunderland but embarrassing to have to stoop to these levels.
i hope sol cambell signs could be good for taylor to play alongside with all his experince
dean
at last light at the end of the tunnel ashleys finaly heading for the exit!!!!!!!!
dean
now thats loyalty not like sicknote(sid) owen good riddings to a hasbeen
dean
Proper Geordie
Taylor = Great Player
Well it certainly won't come from your lot; Harrods indeed, you couldn't even nab the boy Doyle - he preferred the mighty Wolves instead . . . . . Harrods my asre - scraps of the scraps of the scraps!
A decent bid and he'll be gone.
With Bassong deserting, Taylor is even more critical to NUFC's cause next season!
I would seriously consider making him him club captain too.
Good news for Taylor.
