The Brazilian, who topped the timesheets in Friday's testing session, posted a time of 2:10.393 which was 0.173 of a second better than that of Alain Menu and 0.218 quicker than local driver Tiago Monteiro.

Robert Huff was fourth fastest followed by Alessandro Zanardi, Gabriele Tarquini, Joerg Mueller and Andy Priaulx.

James Thompson looked to be making progress in his LADA Priora by improving his times midway through the session but the Briton suffered fuel pressure problems which stopped him getting closer to the pace and his best time was only 23rd overall.

Fellow LADA Sport driver Japp Van Lagen had problems with his gearbox. The Dutchman got stuck in neutral while taking a corner and consequently the car went sideways and hit the wall.

Stefano D'Aste set the fastest lap of the Independent competitors (2:11.505) which placed him a solid 10th overall, one tenth faster than Tom Coronel.

The 30 minute session was red flagged after nine minutes as an advertising banner fell onto the track.
