South Africa's players wore white armbands in the third and final Test against the British and Irish Lions in protest at lock Bakkies Botha's two-match ban.
Botha was suspended by the IRB for a dangerous charge on Lions prop Adam Jones in the second Test that left the Welshman with a dislocated shoulder.
"As a sign of solidarity the Springbok players have decided to wear white armbands," said South African Rugby Players' Association chief executive Piet Heymans in a statement issued before Saturday's game.
"We will be consulting our legal team next week to consider all options available to assist Bakkies Botha and provide him with a sense of justice as he has suffered significantly due to this suspension," added Heymans.
"Bakkies hit a ruck just before this one in question in a similar style and was not penalised. This inconsistency has upset the players and they felt very strongly they must... show their unhappiness with the application of the relevant law."

BTW Shaw's knee to Du preez's back should've been a red card and "an 8 game suspension". Calling that move "clumsy" is the worst piece of commentating I've ever heard!! Ever!!
Hmmm .... @#$% calls all over in the game and now some right here. Nothing as bad as a one-eyed pommy spectator. Kudos to the Boks for doing something they knew would bite them in the backside by wearing those bands. Watched the third test just now - such a pity raking is not part of the game anymore - never seen so many guys go over the top (both sides).
Whilst I agree that a citing was probably the wrong call, and that a yellow was all that was needed, you have to laugh at the pathetic armbands the boks choose to wear! Grow up guys, take it on the chin and move on. It is swings and roundabouts, yes Bakkies was unlucky to get ban, but on the other hand Berger can consider himself lucky to only get 8 weeks for that ridiculous eye gouge.
IRB chuck the book at them...
Simply disregard of protocol and governing body rules.
Wheather you thought it was a suspension act or not...You have to accept the judicuries decision and be a big boy and deal with it.
BUT what could the IRB do except fine them??
Deduct points from World Rankings?
Make them Tour a developing country?
Your thoughts?????
How sweet was this - justice was done - a good tanking.
John B. Then when the lions did it in the 3rd test how come he didnt get the sin bin or banned? One rule for Boks and another for the Roses! You can call yourselves lions anymore since they dont get hurt so easily.
How ridiculous!
Botha was indeed on the wrong end of a post match decision but it WAS an illegal charge. He clearly doesn't bind until after the hit, making it a charge. Its a close call but I don't think it was an intentional charge just bad timing. A penalty and possibly a binning (since it was dangerous) but not a citing.
Despite that, wearing armbands is just pathetic. Should the Lions have worn black armbands over their eyes in a show of disgust over a poxy 8 week ban for attempting to gouge someone's eyes out. Should they have worn referee coloured armbands to demonstrate that the refereeing is what cost them this series not talent.
This is all about shifting the focus away from blatant cheating last week and the gouging incident.
like a bunch of @#$% stop being stupid
Sad @#$% omg...
I"ve stopped watching rugby ever since It all went "proffesional" Dave W
the bokka deservedly won the test series well done richly deserved,
the lions only woke up in the last game, to little to late, not the victory the lions were looking for, shame they couldn't pull it off in the 2nd test, but the result stands, no crying, no whining, good rugby you give it you take it, i have watched bakkies and skulk over the years mature into formidable opponents if you want to match their tenacity be prepared to get down in the turf. you sort it out on the field.
of course the bok commentators are biased, and their coach is a poes and the toe on the line will be whined over
for as long as the blue bulls sell kak wors but who cares i am a rooi neck who lived among these people, love the land, love the cappies, loved their girls, love to watch them play rugby.
It's not fair, it's not fair, boo hoo. I know, let's wear these silly armbands. That'll make the IRB sit up and take notice! Good grief, grow up!!!!
Always a biased decision, the ban is not deserved by the palyer Botha.!!
A Neautral lover of rugby.!!
I only got the chance to see the hightlights in the evening and that was on Sc4 and the whole thing was in Welsh so I know nothing about the commentry. However the Welsh had the chance to see the game, better than the BBC.
It shames the game i love so dearly to hear some of the comments coming from the SA team and management ,i watched a great game of Rugby last night but was ashamed by the BIAS of the commentators .I always thought that commentators were supposed to be unBIASED, but not on this series .Joel Stransky who earned a living playing and coaching in the UK was not even on the same planet as the rest of us Rugby fans ,Oh for a good commentry to match the Rugby on the field.
i'd really question how much some of you know about rugby if you say he deserved to get banned.
there was absolutely nothing illegal in the hit on jones at all. injuries are part and parcel of playing rugby, it's not a reason to ban someone.
Shaun b
wtf has cricket got to do with rugby.......................just incase you had not worked it out for yourself only england are playing in the ashes so that would make it impossible for the BRITISH AND IRISH LIONS to lose, you tool!!!
The @#$% coward intended to cause damage to Adam Jones asthe so called Beast was being stuffed by him,I remember Scott Gibbs knocking another so called SA hardman (sorry bullying coward)back 10m + in a tackle.
there is no way that the IRB will rescind the ban, otherwise it will make a mockery of the disciplinary system. Botha should just stop being petulant and accept that the crime is getting caught, which he did!!
You muppets still got beat 2-1, and it won't be long before you get your but's kicked by the Aussies in the Ashes.
