Transfers - Your view: Owen right for United?

Eurosport - Sat, 04 Jul 14:25:00 2009

Michael Owen to Manchester United? Has the world gone crazy, or just Alex Ferguson?

FOOTBALL michael owen newcastle - 0

Or maybe the sceptics are the ones who have lost their marbles and Owen is indeed still capable of doing a job and worthy of a deal with the Premier League champions.

A few days ago the out-of-contract Newcastle striker was weighing up whether to join Hull City or Stoke.

Now, all of a sudden he can entertain the prospect of playing Champions League football next season. A simply amazing turnaround.

So what does Ferguson see in Owen?

You rarely see his name without the prefix 'proven goalscorer', and his career record speaks for itself.

There is no denying he has lost his pace over recent years, but has he retained his instinct for goal? Do strikers like Owen ever lose their eye for the back of the net?

What about his mentality on the pitch at the moment? Ferguson likes to see desire and commitment to the cause from his players, but Owen showed few signs of those qualities in last season's relegation battle with Newcastle.

And of course, there are the doubts over his fitness. Is signing him too much of a gamble? Or with a pay-as-you-play deal in place, will United have done enough to cover their backs?

Where would he play for United? Surely he cannot expect more than a bench role at Old Trafford?

Does his signing smack of a panic buy, having missed out on their other main transfer targets, or is this something that Ferguson has been planning?

  1. This is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO funny listening to Liverfool fans (and I use that word fans lightly) slagging off even their best former players, trying to convince themselves Owen will fail, well he was pool through and through but got sh'gged by that halfwit Spanish clown Benitez sold to his paella eating cousins who sold him to a team who were half way round the U- bend.So tell me WHAT DO YOU EXPECT HIM TO DO WHEN THE CHAMPIONS ASK HIM TO PLAY FOR THEM??? Say sorry but I want to hang around in case my mate Steve G convinces the Kop to buy me back like they did with Robbie Foul-up HA DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH YOU JUST CAN'T STAND THE FACT THAT YOU SOLD ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS YOU EVER HAD BEFORE HE EVEN REACHED HIS PRIME!!!!!!
Well Boo Hoo I hope he sticks one in the net at the kop end and has the BIGGEST LAUGH OF ALL.

You've signed a dud, a guy that will spend more time warming the bench or lying on a table...and you muppets are cheering on two scousers next season, what a pisser! hahahaha

  10. doris dazzler you are a monkey brain united are always close no matter what players they sell im a blackburn fan and even know saf knows what he is doing owen and rooney sounds good for united and for england get in there cant wait for next season now no ronaldo but alot more even!

From chris, on Sun 5 Jul 12:28AM
  11. Owen will be good for UTD. Ruud Van Nisterooy was also injured before he came to Man U. But SAF brought him in. SAF will give Owen confidence again. He is dangerous in the box. There weren't any good passers at Newcastle, yet he scored more goals than Tevez. Agree with William T. Owen will prove to be quite good business. Better suited to partner Rooney, than Tevez. Besides, his experience will come in handy. The young guns, Macheda, Welbeck and hopefully Campbell, can certainly learn from his positioning sense. From what I have seen in his games at Newcastle, Owen does track back a little to help in defending. Let's give him a chance.

  13. so dorisdazzler you trying to tell me you go to the nou camp week in week out for you information i live in Manchester and holda season ticket to old trafford and anyway i dont give a f**k where anyone comes from this is a free world and you can support or follow who you like all i done was make a statement on the topic about wether owen would make it at utd or not i never insulted anyone so why do you feel the need to insult me?

From WILLIAM T, on Sat 4 Jul 10:24PM
  14. No one knows how Owen will do at United
But one thing is for sure
Fergie will have him out if he thinks he will not make it.

Every Season is the same everyone slagging off UTD
but then that is what you get when you are the best.

End of this comming season will tell if it was right or wrong
but One thing for sure is i would BACK FERGIE TO BE RIGHT
HISTORY PROVES THAT TO BE SO

From ray, on Sat 4 Jul 10:19PM
  15. Hey WILLIAM T i would get that profile picture framed now, because i don't think you will be seeing anything like that again, never mind you probably a plastic red from down south or ireland anyway.

From dorisdazzler, on Sat 4 Jul 10:09PM
  16. i would pick owen over tevez anyday he is sure to get goals at man utd

From WILLIAM T, on Sat 4 Jul 10:03PM
  17. what a lot seem to forget on here is fergie was looking for a replacement for tevez and thats why he has signed owen so lets look at the facts yes tevez will run all day chasing lost causes but how many goals did he score this year for the 25 milllion they wanted for him plus the 100k plus he wanted in wages? i wouldn't mind putting a bet on the fact owen scores more the tevez did even on the number of mins played i bet owen has a better average than tevez did and fergie still has 80 million to play with

From WILLIAM T, on Sat 4 Jul 10:01PM

  20. I think if Michael Owen wants to turn his career around then fergie is definitely the man to do it!! I think he could prove to be a great, bargain signing for us and if he stays fit he could do a very good job for us next season
