Transfers - Your view: Owen right for United?

Eurosport - Sat, 04 Jul 14:25:00 2009

Michael Owen to Manchester United? Has the world gone crazy, or just Alex Ferguson?

FOOTBALL michael owen newcastle - 0

Or maybe the sceptics are the ones who have lost their marbles and Owen is indeed still capable of doing a job and worthy of a deal with the Premier League champions.

A few days ago the out-of-contract Newcastle striker was weighing up whether to join Hull City or Stoke.

Now, all of a sudden he can entertain the prospect of playing Champions League football next season. A simply amazing turnaround.

So what does Ferguson see in Owen?

You rarely see his name without the prefix 'proven goalscorer', and his career record speaks for itself.

There is no denying he has lost his pace over recent years, but has he retained his instinct for goal? Do strikers like Owen ever lose their eye for the back of the net?

What about his mentality on the pitch at the moment? Ferguson likes to see desire and commitment to the cause from his players, but Owen showed few signs of those qualities in last season's relegation battle with Newcastle.

And of course, there are the doubts over his fitness. Is signing him too much of a gamble? Or with a pay-as-you-play deal in place, will United have done enough to cover their backs?

Where would he play for United? Surely he cannot expect more than a bench role at Old Trafford?

Does his signing smack of a panic buy, having missed out on their other main transfer targets, or is this something that Ferguson has been planning?

  2. If the set-up at Man U suits Michael Owen I believe he will be a success. He may well be a little slower but he remains a proven goal scorer and the fast type of skillful play ay Man U will provide him with a strong base to rejuvenate his career. He should have gone to Everton, his first love, and he would have finished his career in style.

  5. If any manager can revive Michael Owen's career, it is either Sir Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger. And I have a strong feeling that it could proved to be a master stroke of Sir Alex yet again. Only time will tell. Best wishes to MU and MO.

  8. Zitrostar I think Fergie is planning a big surprise retirement goin back to Scotland and leaving Utd like he found them @#$%. I bet he remembers when he was 1 game from the sack payback time he'll stay about 6 months get all the never bins and has bins and stick em all together and see whot the next manager can do with that them. And Owen he only bought to drive him to race meetings while he gets bladdered in the back seat so Owens going to be useful for the first time in years cheaper than a taxi

  13. I BELIEVE MICHAEL OWEN WILL BE A GREAT SIGNING FOR UTD IF HE STAYS FIT FOR MAJORITY OF THE SEASON I THINK WE COULD EASILY BE LOOKING AT HIM SCORING 15-20 GOALS THIS SEASON I THINK FERGIE HAS MADE AN EXCELLENT SIGNING HERE,OK HE ISNT THE BIG NAME SIGNING LIKE WE KEEP READING ABOUT (BENZEMA,AGUERO,FABIANO,HUNTLAAR) BUT WHO SAYS THESE PLAYERS WOULD DO THE SAME IN THE PREMIERSHIP HAS THEY HAVE DONE IN THERE OWN LEAGUES OWEN IS PROVEN IN THE PREM ,WELL DONE FERGIE

  14. I hope united do sign another striker, as much as i have always admired owens tallent, there is no denying he has had has fair share of injuries, but as a top class centre forward, im not sure he is the one thats going to help united win the league again, but I do think he will score more goals than berbatov if he stays fit. United still need a big name coming in and i like the look of louis fabiano, but they need to hurry up with that one before read madrid nick him, like every other top player!
