Michael Owen to Manchester United? Has the world gone crazy, or just Alex Ferguson?
Or maybe the sceptics are the ones who have lost their marbles and Owen is indeed still capable of doing a job and worthy of a deal with the Premier League champions.
A few days ago the out-of-contract Newcastle striker was weighing up whether to join Hull City or Stoke.
Now, all of a sudden he can entertain the prospect of playing Champions League football next season. A simply amazing turnaround.
So what does Ferguson see in Owen?
You rarely see his name without the prefix 'proven goalscorer', and his career record speaks for itself.
There is no denying he has lost his pace over recent years, but has he retained his instinct for goal? Do strikers like Owen ever lose their eye for the back of the net?
What about his mentality on the pitch at the moment? Ferguson likes to see desire and commitment to the cause from his players, but Owen showed few signs of those qualities in last season's relegation battle with Newcastle.
And of course, there are the doubts over his fitness. Is signing him too much of a gamble? Or with a pay-as-you-play deal in place, will United have done enough to cover their backs?
Where would he play for United? Surely he cannot expect more than a bench role at Old Trafford?
Does his signing smack of a panic buy, having missed out on their other main transfer targets, or is this something that Ferguson has been planning?

WAT IS IT WITH U PEOPLE--BUY SPANISH,BUY BRAZILAN,BUY PORTUGESE,BUY RUSSIAN BUT U DONT WANT LOCAL.NO WONDER THESE COUNTRIES EXCEL BECAUSE ALL THE YOUNG TALENT ARE GIVEN CHANCES BUT THE LOCAL YOUTH ARE PLAYING IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP OR LOWER DIVISIONS.IN A COUPLE OF YEARS WE WENT EVEN HAVE A NATIONAL TEAM WORTH MENTIONING.GIVING OWEN A CHANCE IS A START
Zitrostar I think Fergie is planning a big surprise retirement goin back to Scotland and leaving Utd like he found them @#$%. I bet he remembers when he was 1 game from the sack payback time he'll stay about 6 months get all the never bins and has bins and stick em all together and see whot the next manager can do with that them. And Owen he only bought to drive him to race meetings while he gets bladdered in the back seat so Owens going to be useful for the first time in years cheaper than a taxi
I dont think he will do good
Owen will do the job that Sir Alex asks him to do , remember those other players he has signed Teddy, Lauren, Henrik all came in and did the job that was asked of them
Maybe it is a gamble, but it is one I think is well worth the risk. Owen is a class player when playing with class players. He was gr8 at the dirty, rotten scousers; never had a chance at Madrid; never had a hope at the useless Toon, where even Ronny would have looked ordinary! Trust in SAF, give MO a chance and watch his partnership with Rooney stun all those doubting morons - especially the jealous Scousers whose team is about to be ripped apart. Ha!!
mike foster 56 wot Scoucers do you wan't to sicken WAYYNE ROONEY AND THE CRIPPLE
oh and theres no such thing you red scum as free
Fergie's officially lost his marbles to senility.
Wonder how liverpool fans feel with their ex idol moving to the enermy. (He's only there for the money) and thats all Man U can afford zero no tranfer fees wages only.
got to give our American cousins a decent wage anyway Fergie would only waste it better cash in your pocket than give it an idiot
392.If thats the case why have Real Madrid & all their big money star players been rubbish for years now.If Owen finds any sort of form at Utd I'll personally let him cut off my testicles and use them as footballs, because it aint going to happen, and anyone who think he's going to be a success is either plain stupid or just ignorant.WAKE UP HE'S A JOKE,you'd have been better off asking Bobby Charlton out of retirement lol ps he should hang his head in shame for what he done at Newcastle,Perhaps the 1st signs of Fergie lossing the plot, seen as he's meant to be after Fabiano too? Think it will be between Liverpool & Chelsea this season,I'm also tipping Spurs to pip Arsenal to the last champions league spot,i know most people will disagree with me on that one,but I've just got a feeling that they'll play better as a team this season.
Man u need experience men like owen. Owen has always dream of playing for the red devils. The time has come for him to prove wether he is still the owen of 2003. Sir Alex thats brillant of you. Let us wait and watch what the striker and see him do magic. But my advice to owen is that he should not end up in bench.
yes!owen are the right man fo4 MU..
own can play very vell along side wayne rooney
Fergie has never let MU down yet lets just w8 and see what he has planned for this "striker". . . You can have a sure bet that there is a really good reason behind his descision to sign owen......maybe they are buying a race horse together. . . . .
his wages should have brought the best out of him
you can not yet say he's the right man for man u but we'll see how he goes after a few games. he used to be useless because he was not in the right club and now being the player in one of the best he 'might' get that old time spirit. good luck owen. don't screw your lucky fate.
How long into the season before Owen wipes that smirk off his face or will it last for two years?
Yes Owen is right for United.
Ferguson, Owen & a spare 80 million quid. Glazers, you’d better watch out.
Owen used to say when he scored a goal for Liverpool or England, in his head he dreamed that he was scoring it for Manchester United. Well, now that he has his chance…. we’ll see if this was true or not. Owen a multi-millionaire? Hasn’t he spent it all down the bookies?
man utd should buy a young striker tat hav d quality of owen................please buy lulinha from Brazil or kerlon..................
Hahaha, Man Utd couldn't sign up a young world class striker so they had to settle for reject/mercenay Owen
Pathetic SAF, the whole world is laughing at you now.
