Wimbledon - Serena: I don't care about rankings

Eurosport - Sat, 04 Jul 21:00:00 2009

How can an athlete own three of the four major titles in their sport yet still not be rated the world's best?

TENNIS Serena Williams Wimbledon - 0

That was the question puzzling not only Wimbledon champion Serena Williams on Saturday but everyone in tennis.

The American was all smiles on court after beating elder sister Venus 7-6 6-2 to win her third Wimbledon crown and she doubled up in laughter when asked to explain why Dinara Safina, yet to win a grand slam title, held the number one ranking.

"I think Dinara did a great job to get to number one - she won (non grand slam titles in) Rome and Madrid," Serena joked.

"I think if you hold three grand slam titles maybe you should be number one but not on the WTA Tour obviously, so... You know, my motivation is maybe just to win another grand slam and stay number two, I guess," she grinned.

Serena has every right to feel baffled after she added the Wimbledon crown to the US and Australian Open titles she has won in the past 10 months.

Safina on the other hand has been rewarded by a system that appears to value consistency rather than the quality of tournaments won.

It has led many people to criticise the way the rankings are calculated and when Serena was usurped by Safina this year, the American claimed she was still the "real number one" no matter what the rankings said. Now she prefers not to dwell on it.

"I would go crazy just thinking about it. I think anyone really could," said the 27-year-old.

"I'd rather definitely be number two and hold three grand slams in the past year than be number one and not have any. I don't know what to do to be number one. I don't even care anymore.

"I think the girl, Dinara, who is number one, you can clearly see by her physique how hard she works. You can't get anywhere by not doing the best and not working your hardest.

"So I'm happy for her (but) I'm really excited that I won Wimbledon."

Safina, a finalist at the Australian and French Opens in 2009, has constantly had to defend her status but she did herself no favours when she was walloped 6-1 6-0 in the Wimbledon semi-finals by Venus.

According to WTA records, the result was the most lopsided win over a current world number one at a grand slam event.

In his last address as WTA chief, Larry Scott defended the system.

"The ranking system is designed sort of around king or queen of the hill - who is the strongest, most consistent performer over the year," he said.

"While I know it does stir debate, the one place it doesn't stir a debate is in the locker room. The players believe in that ranking system."

  1. #76, 78, 79 are spot on in this debate. Murray has been so hyped since January to win a Slam and even seeded 3 for a big wimbledon title that no brit has won in 70 years. Again Murray played similar to Safina in that they got their points in events nobody can remember and then moved on. This seeding favoured both of them in that at Wimbledon where they have never held a Slam title they were higly seeded. Murray got through fine until he met Roddick, he beat at queens, another unknown event, Safina on the other hand before the match insisted she has beaten Venus in Rome masters and forgot she is meeting her in semi for a baggel she received thereby demeaning no 1 title. In the history of this ranking, there is no no 1 who has suffered such ignomity as did safina in the semi final against Venus. We cannot change the rules of ranking and if ranking in wta terms is all about winning minor events to promote the game fine. Murray is heading towards that side of events if he consistently beat Roger or any other top 10 in wta minor events. This is the similarity between Murray and Safina.

  3. Wow, this is much closer than I thought it was going to be. Roddick has a really good chance of winning this, and I kind of hope he does; he deserves to win this, he's put in a lot of effort in recent years and has been unlucky to have only won the one Slam, so I'm rooting for Andy in this match. I'm pretty sure Federer will beat Sampras' record at some point, regardless of the outcome today; so being delayed for a few months or a year won't hurt him too badly.

  5. Heck with the President of the WTA, and his system, because you are different they try and hold you down with unqualified individuals, that fits their mold. The fact remains you have 3 Majors in a year, they are the Grand Prizes per quarter that everyone seems to be playing for, anyone WTA player can play 100 or so matches per year to build up their "consistency" against unranked Girl Scott types, and turn in their top five quanity report cards so that the computer can register a win percentage..and rank your sorry A$$ (6-1, 6-0) A NUMBER #1 RATING TO HELP YOU AND YOUR SPONSORS. Serena & Venus, stay focus and keep bringing home the gold, the world knows who pound for pound the UNDISPUTABLE CHAMPIONS you are.

  6. Serena- you're doing fine. Right, don't let the system get into you. You're performance shows you're World No. 1. The system cannot deny you that. Keep it up!!!

  7. Come to think of it, those negative minds, you are just jealous of these girls achievement. What do you expect to read or hear from 'LOW LIFE' individual.

Williams sisters go girls you are nos 1 & 2 in everyones' rankings WTA needs to move with time and drop the antic/ancient rules, this is 21st century.

  8. Michael B "get off your fat black @#$% and win some minor tournaments" is a valid comment, excluding the use of the word 'BLACK'- what has the colour of her skin got to do with this debate? Absolutely nothing!!

We all know Serena plays less games than the other players on the tour but that is how her and Venus have stayed at the top of their game and continue to win majors. They are the best in womens' tennis of today, and though may not be number 1, their titles say it all. When you are remembered in the tennis hall of fame nobody cares about the minor tournaments, in 30 years time will people rememember Safina winning in the minors- no. But if she wins a major that's her mark made and people will not question her being ranked number one.

Phil L do us a favour and logon to the WTA site to read about the ranking system or, perhaps not waste your time as one needs a modicum of intelligence to understand it........ha ha.

  10. To Michael B , I honestly cant believe the @#$% you are talking about , how can you start slagging of Serena calling her a low life piece of Trash with no Class, consistency is what you are going for is that it you honestly tell me that Safina winning 2 minor tournaments and Serena 3 Grand Slams is on Par, from the way you talk can see you are a complete @#$% and than for you to state that she should get of her fat black £$%%@@@ is dispicable . Firstly Safina was whitewashed by Venus and surely Grand Slams is the ultimate battles no way rome or madrid be compared to wIMBLEDON OR US OPEN , get a reality check and get of you @#$% and start appreciating winners and not complaining about Serena's Conference sge had every right to question it even the reporters and officials in Tennis field . questioned it as well . Your the low life piece of trash for slagging Serena off , you dumb @#$%!!!!

  12. AM I RIGHT IN SAYING YOU GET POINTS FOR WINNING TITLES, IF SO, THE MORE TITLES YOU WIN THE MORE POINTS YOU GET.IF SERENA PLAYS IN LESS EVENTS THAN DINARA HOW CAN SHE EXPECT TO BE NO 1.

  13. I personally think the ranking system is @#$% based on consistency. How can u be consistent and not win anything. Its @#$%. Fact is serena and venus should be no 1 & 2, they have dominated every damn thing expecially in the doubles and it suprises me that they aint even no 1 in d doubles..@#$%! Now Roger will be no 1 if he wins wimbledon which he wont tho. Simply because nadal pulled out of two major tournaments due to injury and still leads with over 5000 points. Now suddenly, one wimbledon takes Roger back to no 1. I say again, @#$%! Nadal, get back from Injury and send Roger to retirement NOW...

However, you have no right refering to people as Jamaican/ West Indian scum.. Let us celebrate the success of Serena and Venus. There is no need to put down and sterotype a whole nation /Jamaica or region - West Indies. By the way Jamaica is not synonymous to west Indies.! Well done Serena!

  17. Being number one in the world doesn't bother Serena, it's fine. She just bleats on about it, having the attitude that winning a Grand Slam is enough and not understanding the rankings system. But it's okay, becuase she's not bothered by the rankings or not being number one. And she was a massive disrespectful @#$% at her press conference. But remember, she's not bothered by the rankings, not at all. Not one bit. She's not bitter, she just wants to make sure everyone knows how much she is bothered by it.

The spectators at wimbledon appreciated the performances of the williamses yesterday for their winning singles and doubles. The crowd was good and they enjoyed every point played. In this forum it really showed that non achievers are most disgruntled. it is not within our powers to judge who is no 1 or not. If Serena wants no 1, she has had it so Safina deserves her no 1 and soon it will be over to another female player. The only thing is that there are two dominant players and they happen to be Afro-American. They are good players and have the mouth of Muhammed Ali, and this is the excitment in the women's tennis. Not what Safina brought to the game or Maria Sharapova. We are talking about the change of women tennis brought about by the power game of the williamses. In fact most coaches are teaching their players to play like them and in the end they are exhausted and pack up on early retirements.. The likes of Henin and Cljisters, jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic are victims of this power tennis. safina on the other hand is suffering slowly and this culminated in her humiliation at a GS 6-1,6-0 by a powerful hitting Venus.. There is really no point discussing about the williamses anymore as they have now 18 GS between them and 6 or more women's GS doubles; Serena has now 11 GS and 43 titles.. Safina no 1 suitable for white racist here in blogg has nothing only a few wta tours titles which I don't really know what they are. These titles are irrelevant because we don't know them. We know that Serena won Australian Open, Won US and now Wimbledon. This has been permanently engraved in wimbledon history forever. The last English man that won GS was back 1938 and we still remember that till today, not who was no 1 with no titles. Of course, Safina will win if she is playing the likes o

  20. with a loud mouth like that and an uncouth attitude towards other players on the tour, serena doesnt need enemies. she does the job herself. venus might not be as successful as serena in terms of prize money or titles but she handles herself better.
the true attribute of a great champion is not just winning titles but to behave like one.
