How can an athlete own three of the four major titles in their sport yet still not be rated the world's best?
That was the question puzzling not only Wimbledon champion Serena Williams on Saturday but everyone in tennis.
The American was all smiles on court after beating elder sister Venus 7-6 6-2 to win her third Wimbledon crown and she doubled up in laughter when asked to explain why Dinara Safina, yet to win a grand slam title, held the number one ranking.
"I think Dinara did a great job to get to number one - she won (non grand slam titles in) Rome and Madrid," Serena joked.
"I think if you hold three grand slam titles maybe you should be number one but not on the WTA Tour obviously, so... You know, my motivation is maybe just to win another grand slam and stay number two, I guess," she grinned.
Serena has every right to feel baffled after she added the Wimbledon crown to the US and Australian Open titles she has won in the past 10 months.
Safina on the other hand has been rewarded by a system that appears to value consistency rather than the quality of tournaments won.
It has led many people to criticise the way the rankings are calculated and when Serena was usurped by Safina this year, the American claimed she was still the "real number one" no matter what the rankings said. Now she prefers not to dwell on it.
"I would go crazy just thinking about it. I think anyone really could," said the 27-year-old.
"I'd rather definitely be number two and hold three grand slams in the past year than be number one and not have any. I don't know what to do to be number one. I don't even care anymore.
"I think the girl, Dinara, who is number one, you can clearly see by her physique how hard she works. You can't get anywhere by not doing the best and not working your hardest.
"So I'm happy for her (but) I'm really excited that I won Wimbledon."
Safina, a finalist at the Australian and French Opens in 2009, has constantly had to defend her status but she did herself no favours when she was walloped 6-1 6-0 in the Wimbledon semi-finals by Venus.
According to WTA records, the result was the most lopsided win over a current world number one at a grand slam event.
In his last address as WTA chief, Larry Scott defended the system.
"The ranking system is designed sort of around king or queen of the hill - who is the strongest, most consistent performer over the year," he said.
"While I know it does stir debate, the one place it doesn't stir a debate is in the locker room. The players believe in that ranking system."

J u r an idiot! Serena speaks the truth and that's the reasson she's more successful than u will ever be, than ur entire family even! Serena speaks her mind and that's so good to see in tennis someone who can freely express themselves. I tell the press loves her! Serena has so much love from millions and she doesn't dwell on negativity like u! What's ur career like? Now compare it with Serena's!
If Fed wins he'll be number one!
WTA ranking system doesn't bother Serena and Venus! They are the best and we all know that! Everybody knows Wimbledon! Who cares about a tournament in Rome or Madrid? Quality not quantity......am sure we all wacthed how the so called number one player Dinara was demolished by Venus in the semis. It's so embarrassing to see that's the girl ranked higher. System overhaul pronto pls!
rankings, grand slams, and so on...........
if federer will win today, have a look at the last 4 grand slams back to us open 2008
will fed be no1 tomorro?
better just enjoy the game!
Williams must not be very good at mathematics if she questions the ranking order.
Some people are commenting like they want to teach Serena how to be number one, and the virtues of being No.1; as if she has never been there before. She was not being arrogant when she made her comment, she was only offering her opinion -albeit in a different manner from what she had done before.
I do agree, however, that there is no need to tinker with the system just because of this, almost unique, situation. No ranking system is perfect and examples abound in golf, football etc. If nothing else, there is now considerable pressure on Safina to win a grand slam.
Also, the use of the word 'consistent' appears to be misleading in some of the contexts. The Williams' sisters have performed consistently well in most of the tournaments they have taken part in. They have just not competed in sufficient number of tournamnets to acquire enough points to pull them higher up the rankings.
#43 same as 'J'.....you guys are so sick but very comical.
Chukwuemeka W,
Your comment-45 is what i have been trying to get across for weeks now!
How come you get applauded for it, and i get pilloried!
Anyway, thank you!!!!
I can only assume people resurrect this debate just so that they can have a go at whatever response serena gives to their 'trap' questions. the system was reformed only this january by reducing the reckonable games from 18 to 16 and by increasing the majors points from 1600 to 2000, whilst the other good features of the system remained intact. As i see it therefore, everybody should be happy in another three months time when the annual impact will have caught up and, whoever is no. 1 will be fairly so. since most of the others carry no more than 800 or 1000 for the masters, someone like dinara will have to win the majority of her 16 tournaments for her to possibly stay ahead of serena if the latter continues to win the majors, which is unlikely (by either of them) but it will be a fairer outcome. So where is the debate other than just another excuse to bash Serena?
Their singles final was real garbage. Some great points but more errors. It's a pity for Venus she deserves it the most of all players this year to win Wimbledon because she played great throughout the whole tournament except the final =s
But ... I really liked there doubles final (Thanks to Venus, Stosur and Stubbs!). But it was hugely unfair that Serena was just blasting her drive-volleys on Stosur and Stubbs' body instead of hitting normal volleys and place them like most of the professional doubles players do. You can even place the ball too with a drive-volley! But all in all a nice doubles final!
congratulations to dera generous Venus to follow family orders
& allow victory to serena as it was her turn for the Wimbledon G/S title
number 1 means getting enough points from enough tournaments - grand slams are only 4 of the years tournaments but only snobs think this should be the criteria for someone to be known as number 1. I f Serena played and won more tournaments instead of making snide remarks about Dinara - I for one would think of her as number 1. Until then, she is just someone who cannot admit that points are prizes, grand slams are just a portion of the necessary points overall. When she becomes more gracious, like her sister Venus, then more of the tennis fans would like her to be number 1.
#45, #44. I am impressed with your free mind and I think we should ask the Eurosport to provide us a better audience for a lively debate. I appreciate wisdom and that is what you've done. Bye for now..
The WTA tour ranking system is perfectly alright. Dinara Safina is the no.1 player in the world but simply not the world's best. She is consistant but just can't deliver on the big stage. On the other hand, The Williams Sister's enormous talent have made them defy conventional approach to tennis. They both didn't even need to play warm-up tournaments before Wimbledon. The William Sister's immense talent have made mockery of the ranking system and causing it to be subjected to possible overhauling. For a player to prevail regardless of rank is compelling. Playing fewer tournaments and still dominate in the Grand Slam events has never been achieved by the past or present players except The Williams Sisters. Quite frankly the WTA boss and organizers would not have any answer to this unique situation but to hope that top 10 players to include the no.1 ranked player hopefully step up and let their performance reflect on their rankings. It is apparent that ever since Justin Henin retired, we have seen few that accended the no.1 spot and dethroned without a Slam. However, we have to remember that they did work hard CONSISTANTLY to get there but The Williams Sister's impeccable talent is making it seen as though current no.1 players do not deserve to there. Let just say that The Williams Sisters are in a leaque of their own. Before they turned pro. and got better, the ranking system has always been there but with few minor adjustments. We are pointing fingers at the wrong direction....we should not be pointing fingers at all. The ranking system is right for the tour and the players. It up to the top 10 players to play real tennis.

so much of your history.. by the way thanks ATTAHA.
but system is sytem.....rules is rules....laws is laws....
when you live in a society, no matter what...you have to follow the system, the rules, the law.
you may say Serena Wiliams does'nt need number 1, but the real thing is she did hungry for it. she never says, but she knew she like it.
if she can't live with the system, she could quit. or she can shift to boxing maybe and let her try the Filipino pacman.... hahaha.
smile!!!!!!!!
Read comment from 'J' - absolutely spot on.
#41, just a little of wimble history for women;
1964, Bueno bt smith 6-4, 7-9, 6-3
1965, smith beat Bueno 6-3, 3-6, 6-1
1977 Virginia Wade (British) bt Betty Stove 4-6, 6-3, 6-1
1987 Navratilova bt Graf 7-5, 6-3
1988 Graf bt Navratilova 6-2, 6-1
2008 Venus Williams bt Serena \williams 7-5, 6-4
2009 Serena Williams bt Venus Williams 7-6, 6-2. This is history, nobody mentioned who was no 1 then. Serena dosn't need no 1 anymore. If she is hungary for it she will play more as this is wta requirement. Since 1922, two Russians have played wimbledon finals and only one prevailed and that is Maria Sharapova. A remarkable thing. In Britain Virgnia wade won it 1977 and since then, no British player has played finals. You see them in commentary boxes condemning others or teaching us how they should have played. Empty gongs make the loudest sounds. This is the end of commentary on this blogg
ppl should remember that even your name is engraved in the history of GRAND SLAMS, it does'nt mean that you became number 1, the likes of Serena William who is so arrogant. this only shows how's she raised by her parents, and how they behaved inside the their house. you become number one, ppl will raise you up and you should know how to behave. one more thing, Serena should accept that she so dying to be number 1, but she can't because grandslams is not enough to be number 1, so she must start behaving like human being because inpite of her features some ppl treating her like one. and besides only few enjoyed viewing her in the court, it's not good to the eyes...ok? so stop dreaming so much.
im a fan of serena when shes playing tennis but not when she made arrogant remarks that belittle others. She knows that the reason shes not no.1 is bcos she doesnt play enuf tournamnts. The ranking does not revolve around 4 tournaments in a year only. Otherwise tennis fans will only watch tennis 4 times a year. For a 27 yr old she still speaks like a spoilt teenager. No wonder ppl hate u so much. & fyi serena, watching the wimbledon ladies final is like watching the movie 'gorillas in the mist' - lots of greens & a couple of silverbacks...
there ive said it, my personal comments.
