Evergreen Weir feels as strong as ever

Sat 04 Jul, 05:27 PM

Rangers defender David Weir refuses to accept he is entering the final year of his career as the 39-year-old prepares for his latest pre-season.

Weir will sign a one-year contract later this week when he returns to Murray Park following the summer break.

"Everybody has been telling me since I was 33 or 34 at Everton that this would be my final year," Weir told BBC Scotland. "I have never put timescales on my career."

Weir will be 40 the day after the upcoming Clydesdale Bank Premier League season ends. The Scotland defender made 47 appearances last season, winning the league and cup double as Gers captain, and he is happy to go on defying expectations.

"Everybody keeps asking what the secret is, whether it's eating bananas for breakfast or doing yoga," the former Falkirk and Hearts player said.

"But I think it's whether the person wants to do it and whether they are prepared to sacrifice what they need to and whether they enjoy it enough to take the downside of it. I do.

"I was fortunate enough to play with guys like Richard Gough and Dave Watson who were playing in the Premier League in their late 30s, and I think Dave was even playing in his 40s.

"I have been able to see it's capable of happening. I don't think there is any reason for it not to continue."

Weir is eager to continue playing regularly under Walter Smith next season.

Weir added: "Latterly at Everton I was in and out of the team and that was becoming a problem. The older you get, I think it's harder to jump in and out."

  5. David weir has been a superb signing ,as have all the defenders walter has bought.i expect another cuellar or bougheera to be snapped up again ,at a fraction of their real price.walter has been nothing short of a miracle worker under the circumstances.last season proves the team with the best finances doesnt always win.2-3 yrs of champions league money coupled with selling one or two top players should see the debt erased and bring back the days of growing and integrating good ,young homebred scots that are rangers men ..thru and thru.NO SURRENDER
