Rangers defender David Weir refuses to accept he is entering the final year of his career as the 39-year-old prepares for his latest pre-season.
Weir will sign a one-year contract later this week when he returns to Murray Park following the summer break.
"Everybody has been telling me since I was 33 or 34 at Everton that this would be my final year," Weir told BBC Scotland. "I have never put timescales on my career."
Weir will be 40 the day after the upcoming Clydesdale Bank Premier League season ends. The Scotland defender made 47 appearances last season, winning the league and cup double as Gers captain, and he is happy to go on defying expectations.
"Everybody keeps asking what the secret is, whether it's eating bananas for breakfast or doing yoga," the former Falkirk and Hearts player said.
"But I think it's whether the person wants to do it and whether they are prepared to sacrifice what they need to and whether they enjoy it enough to take the downside of it. I do.
"I was fortunate enough to play with guys like Richard Gough and Dave Watson who were playing in the Premier League in their late 30s, and I think Dave was even playing in his 40s.
"I have been able to see it's capable of happening. I don't think there is any reason for it not to continue."
Weir is eager to continue playing regularly under Walter Smith next season.
Weir added: "Latterly at Everton I was in and out of the team and that was becoming a problem. The older you get, I think it's harder to jump in and out."

#17 Free country bawheid... Your lot were on our pages the last three weeks moaning about no manager... Shoes on the other foot now eh?
WHAT THE HELL ARE JUNGLE JIMS ON TALKING ABOUT OUR CLUB FOR NOTHING ELSE TO DO APART FROM CLAIMING YOUR BENEFITS
And how do you plan on winning any trophies lightspeed with a team of reserves plus Tyne Dailly and Old father time Weir? As for buying another Cuellar, I don't think they take monopoly money in Spain...
Lightspeed...Rangers spent more than Celtic over the last four years in transfer fees so what ur point?
David weir has been a superb signing ,as have all the defenders walter has bought.i expect another cuellar or bougheera to be snapped up again ,at a fraction of their real price.walter has been nothing short of a miracle worker under the circumstances.last season proves the team with the best finances doesnt always win.2-3 yrs of champions league money coupled with selling one or two top players should see the debt erased and bring back the days of growing and integrating good ,young homebred scots that are rangers men ..thru and thru.NO SURRENDER
Great news all Sir Mitty has to do now is keep Bazza and Paradise will gladly take OUR trophy back gj wp.
Caldwell this season.. Broono Was f**ked up in the head 1st season in the hoops (understandably!!..), Last season, he was a fighter for the shirt, but I think this season he should consolidate on his good workrate last season, and above all, screw the heid!.. Then, he will be natural captain material!!
Gaz...deal m8
point 9 stuart, aye a ken, a shounldna go there but do sometimes, ok that be last o it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rangers need centre half anyway as they wont get 30 games from weir this season.
aye maybe im to hard wi Caldwell, he had good season, plus i dina see enough o him playing, big mick no good enough for CL or international games.
Jinky...Broonie for me
caldwell for captain this season i think. hail hail
Gary S...I will give u McManus...never my 1st choice, however Caldwell is quality
nae bother to big davie, class act for Rangers, you see the difference in the scotland team when he no playing, always pi.sh at the back with dumb and dumber.
@#$% sake windae licker we all know that its been Boogie wonderland that has saved him....case being what was the results when boogie was not there and clubfoot was at center half?
