League pull too much for Linwood

Grimsby's new signing Paul Linwood says his desire to play league football is what persuaded him to move to Blundell Park.

The centre-back is desperate to make an impact for the Mariners next season after becoming manager Mike Newell's third summer signing when he joined from Chester on a three-year deal on Friday.

The 25-year-old is delighted to link up with Newell again, having worked under him at Tranmere reserves for a short stint.

"I know the gaffer from my Tranmere days and its someone I am keen to start working with as he has a good reputation in the game," Linwood told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"It's not just that - it's the things he said to me and the squad he is trying to put together. I wanted to stay in the league and Chester also said I could leave if I found something.

"I have signed at a new club with ambition and I'm raring to go."
