Pakistan on top in Galle

Tharanga Paranavitana struck a maiden half-century but Pakistan's bowlers held the edge on day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Debutant seamer Abdur Rauf had built on the success of fellow paceman Mohammad Aamer, who claimed two early wickets during the morning session, by adding another wicket to his tally in the afternoon, while skipper Younus Khan sent back Thilan Samaraweera as Sri Lanka lost wickets regularly in overcast conditions.

However, Tillakaratne Dilshan (28 not out) took the attack to Pakistan and together with debutant Angelo Mathews (17no) had steered Sri Lanka to 194 for five at tea.

Rauf, who had dismissed Mahela Jayawardene for 30 in the morning, struck the first blow in the second session when he induced an edge from Paranavitana (72).

Samaraweera had looked his usual stoic self, but Younus dismissed him for 31.

The Pakistan captain had surprised many by bringing himself on to bowl in the morning but had restricted himself to only a couple of overs.

However, he struck in his first over after lunch, drawing Samaraweera forward and inducing an edge which was caught behind.

Dilshan and Mathews - Sri Lanka's last recognised batting pair - were then left to pick up the pieces and had begun their task with a mixture of caution and aggression.
