Rush: Owen will be a United star

Sat, 04 Jul 08:31:53 2009

Former Liverpool striker Ian Rush has backed Michael Owen to be a goalscoring success at Manchester United.

Owen completed a surprise switch to Old Trafford on Friday night just two days after he became a free agent when his contract at Newcastle expired.

Rush told Sky Sports News: "It's a chance for Michael to get back and score some goals. He'll get chances for Manchester United and will score goals."

Injuries have ruined recent seasons for Owen and the England striker made just 71 league appearances for the Magpies since his move from Real Madrid in 2005.

However, Rush believes the move gives Owen an opportunity to return to form in front of goal after scoring just 30 times in all competitions in the north-east.

The former Wales forward added: "People have knocked Michael Owen all his career but he comes back bigger and better.

"People said he was finished years ago but he's a fantastic player who comes back stronger and better.

"It (the talk) won't worry him, I know the way he is and he doesn't have to prove anything anyway."

Former Liverpool favourite Rush - who scored more than 220 goals for the club in two spells either side of an ill-fated stint in Italy with Juventus - believes Owen would make a good impression were he to return to Anfield.

However, the 47-year-old added: "Personally, I'd like to have seen him at Liverpool but they haven't lost their best strikers. He (manager Rafael Benitez) will be happy with what he's got."

  5. It seems that two Scots namely Souness and SAF and now Rush, believe that Owen will be a success at Man U. Personally, I can't see it particularly in the light of his injury record over the last few seasons. It will be a disaster. SAFcontinues to bring in five feet nothing kids and then promptly puts them out on loan to develop. He seems to be completely blind to the fact that we NEED skilful players in midfield who have both an athletic and physical presence coupled with the ability to retain possession of the ball. It must have been obvious to any inteligent Man U fan that our players get the ball taken off them far too easily and unless SAF does something about this and quickly, we will not compete with the other "Big Three" in the Premiership, all of whom contain more competitive and skilful athletes than Man U. Ferguson needs to wake up and do something about it.

  10. chris comment 16, where did I say any different, I know he never wanted to play for us but instead of feeling sorry for him, shouldn't he have his balls kicked in for taking the big money and giving nothing back in return. I said he's motivated by money, and you say he only came to us for the money?

Only at the end of his contract will we know whether Michael has been a success or failure, after watching his interview it is obvious he is delighted to be joining the premier league champions.I bet he will be a storming success, helping united to become the champions for a record 19 th time.Sir Alex will be proved correct once again, that is why he is the most successful english club manager ever and we are just people who write on football notice boards.ONE LOVE - MUFC

  18. I think a player of Owens caliber should have more medals in his locker. He should of stayed at Newcastle as championship medal would be better than winning nothing at manscum united at the end of the season.

  19. This is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO funny listening to Liverfool fans (and I use that word fans lightly) slagging off even their best former players, trying to convince themselves Owen will fail, well he was pool through and through but got sh'gged by that halfwit Spanish clown Benitez sold to his paella eating cousins who sold him to a team who were half way round the U- bend.So tell me WHAT DO YOU EXPECT HIM TO DO WHEN THE CHAMPIONS ASK HIM TO PLAY FOR THEM??? Say sorry but I want to hang around in case my mate Steve G convinces the Kop to buy me back like they did with Robbie Foul-up HA DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH YOU JUST CAN'T STAND THE FACT THAT YOU SOLD ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS YOU EVER HAD BEFORE HE EVEN REACHED HIS PRIME!!!!!!
Well Boo Hoo I hope he sticks one in the net at the kop end and has the BIGGEST LAUGH OF ALL.
