Everton have confirmed that they are in negotiations to sign Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos.
But the Goodison Park club said that a fee has yet to be agreed for the 24-year-old Swiss international after the Swiss Football Federation last night claimed on their website that the defender's move had been confirmed.
However Everton chairman Bill Kenwright said: "We have been negotiating with Arsenal for the transfer of Philippe. Nothing has been concluded yet but talks are on-going."
A fee of about £6 million is being discussed for the player who was on loan to Milan last season, playing 15 times.
An Everton club source insisted that Senderos - who joined Arsenal in 2003 - was not being signed as a direct replacement for Joleon Lescott, who is at the centre of a battle with Manchester City for his signature.
Senderos is being lined up as cover at the back for Everton, where Phil Jagielka is not due back from a knee injury until November at the earliest.

everton losers gonna finish 8 th this season
I am a Toffee through and through but I do wonder if Lescott is getting more attention than he deserves because he is an England player. I think his 07/08 season was much better than last season, he used to score a lot more goals and frankly I was appalled at his lack of committment for the 1st Chelsea goal in the FA Cup final.
you are obviously being biased being an arsenal fan saying that Senderos(6 million) is better than Lescott(20 Million)
The figures speak for themselves so be fair
talks ongoing because Wenger is trying to do a deal with Lescott . Only stumbling block is how much cash is involved . Arsenal looking at £14m , Everton want £19m. Expect them to meet somewhere in the middle. Moyes does not want to sell to City as they show no respect and are trying to bully everybody . Wenger feels the same and is very happy to have got a big lump of their money for players well past their sell buy date .
Deal will be done by Friday .
Senderos better than Lescott.
from an ARS fan.
I kinda remember Senderous in the team that did not lose en-route the champs league final against barca. He is good. Lost confidence against Drogba and he fell horribly. Am not sure he has overcome that fear of his. His going to Milan did not help as well cos he only played 15 times. There are lots of games and he did only 15!
Well good luck to him if he goes to Everton but then how many managers can get the best out of players outside AW and SAF? Okay maybe Big Sam but then?
Lescott is not a world class defender, its just a case of city doing everything possible to strengthen their back four after missing out on Terry and other big names.
I think for Everton to get a player of Senderos's calibre and the money they will get from the Lescott deal will be good business. Does anyone remember the season what Senderos had when Arsenal were seen as unbeatable? Senderos was a mountain at the back and has always had talent, he's still reasonably young at 24 and Moyes has a great ability to develop his team into tough and resillient players. For all fo you that rubbish Senderos just look at his portfolio his only downfall has been injuries and then not playing as much at Milan.
comment 61, i do not know what your basis for calling Senderos "too old now", i stand to be corrected. As i recall Senderos played in the same youth tournament with Babel, John Obi-Mikel, and Messi. From all indication Senderos will not be more than 22 years, so he is still okay all he needs now is palying time.
Everton defintely need to sell lescott, a replacement could be found easily, take citys money while you can, its them thatll suffer.
Fs sake lescott only cost 5 mill, sell him on for 20, find a replacement and go after moutinho etc or improve the club...
bye bye Lescott...
Senderos must be heartbroken to learn he is on the scrap heap at 24. Blimey mate get real 24 is young.
Everton need a right back before a a centre back, lescott is going, senderos is coming. Everton need young players to mould, senderos is too old now.
I like all the comments criticising Lescott for wanting to double his wages to 90 000 a week
I totally agree with comment 43 but then A.W knows, we never really knew Sagna but he came and displaced Eboe who we all thought was fantastic at RB. Gibbs did so well, we never really missed Clichy. I know he made an error against CR7 but that can be 4given. He may never have 4given himself! If Cole had not been sold, we would never have seen Clichy cos he would have been a part player and may have never developed this good. I want to see Merida become like Fab4, we have all 4gotten that with the arrival of the new CB, Sylvest will not be playing that much except at LB (maybe) but if Djourou, Gallas & the new signing can be fit and focused always, we may just get more clean sheets than b4. Though I would like to see a new (strong) CB to keep Gallas on his toes.I would not want to see Agbolahor do to him like he did last season. I was not impressed. Also AW should give Vela more playing time, otherwise he would never develop so good. Mid-Feild is good with the return of Rosisky who is never shy of a tackle or sliding challenges. Though I want a striker (with killer instincts), I would not mind seeing a DM, I mean a real DM. It helped when we had Gilberto. How much I miss him. The protection he gave Veira when he went 4ward is what we need for Fab when he goes 4ward. 2 seasons ago, Fab was scoring real well cos Flams kept a grip on the middle. Denilson is not doing that and neither is Song. Fab had more cards than Denilson (I guess) last season.
Someone like Essien will be good. Why? What happened to Appiah deal? But AW needs squad players to rotate like SAF does with Fletcher, O'shea and co.
We need a trophy. Carling or FA please!
senderos was part of an impressive Arsenal team...but i fail to see how he can be good for Everton?...a desperate attept for moyes to prop up his defence after lescott took the money and ran!..not a good swap...he would be better off signing someone with authority in defence..!
Good comments coming in from EVERTON supporters...Have to admit I would not want to see Joleon leave BUT if it's true he has asked to go then Davey Moyes should take the cash, bring in Senderos and a couple more to bolster the squad who did brill last season and will want to do the same this coming one
COME ON YOU BLUE BOYS!!!!!!
lescott has gone.... i repeat lescott has gone ive just seen him at the city of manchester
Lescott is a good defender not brilliant he gets some good goals with Moyes Tactics, If he gose to city I think he would be exposed as average under Hughes Everton have a good defensive group of Players who play a system that suits them, to be honest I would rip citys hand off for 22 million Rooney only went for 25.
Would give Moyes Money to spend in the Winter if needed if they get Senderos for 6 million.
What is all these noise about Senderose signing for Everton? For crying out loud, sum1 just mentioned they are in talks over signing him. I was at the Emirate today(4/8/09) and he was excellent in training. Arsenal WILL not sell him...PERIOD!!
