With just one more race to go in this years 4X World Cup series, Dutch flyer Joost Wichman charged to his third win of the season during an incident filled final. With the overall title wrapped up by Aussie sensation Jared Graves at the previous round in Mont-Sainte-Anne, all the talk in the pits was of new kid on the block, and second place finisher Mitch Ropelato.
At just 17 years-old the young American caught the attention of the crowd early on, determined to trick as many of the massive jumps as possible, while leading the field in his heats. In just his second ever World Cup race, Ropelato has shown the world he has a bright future ahead of him, and could well fill the void left by fellow American and 4X phenomenon Brian Lopes.
Third place finisher, Great Britains Dan Atherton, was looking on it throughout the competition and had been tipped by many to take the win, however a three way pile-up in the first corner put an end to his bid for a first World Cup win of 2009. Recovering to salvage a well-earned third place ahead of Michal Prokop, Atherton showed grit and determination, later revealing he had suffered a broken collar-bone during the race.
The Worlds fastest racers will now be looking towards the pinnacle of this year's racing calendar, the 2009 World Championships, taking place this year in Canberra.
