Liverpool will play arguably the strangest pre-season game of the summer when they send a team to face the amateurs Dunmanway Town in west Cork on Thursday.
Dunmanway landed the game when one of their players David Hall, the local doctor, rang Liverpool and invited them to send a team for a match, which the Anfield club duly accepted.
Manager John Buckley said: "I had my reservations when he did it, I honestly thought they'd ignore us."
Dunmanway usually play in front of around 20 people for league matches and have borrowed the ground of the Maria Immaculata Community College where they have hired portable seating, with a 3,000 crowd expected.
Liverpool will send a side of reserves and youth players under coach John McMahon, predominantly the squad that lost 4-3 to Bristol Rovers on Monday.
Liverpool secretary Ian Silvester said: "We are aware of the enormous fan base in the region and are happy to bring a taste of the Premier League to fans in west Cork."

What no Gerrard or Torres. Bad move for Liverpool, even if they sat on the bench apparently they are both ambassadors for Liverpool."with such a hugh fan base" they still sent no one of importance. Irish fans must mean a lot to Liverpool then. NOT
Brilliant! At times like this I'm proud to be a Liverpool supporter. (There are plenty of other times too.)
why do people think friendly results matter?its just a chance for the players to get match fit.im a pool fan and would not care if we lost every friendly once the team was ready for the real games :)
and elaine, seriously, its only the reserves that are going.
whats so strange about it. Its not the first team thats going. God I hate the british journalists on this site
surely if liverpool dont beat this lot .the players will not be good enough for the first team to play in the premiership.
