US Open - Robredo: Djokovic feigned injury

Eurosport - Thu, 04 Sep 04:30:00 2008

Spaniard Tommy Robredo accused Novak Djokovic of exaggerating the seriousness of his injuries to get some extra rest during their draining five-set tussle in the fourth round of the US Open.

TENNIS 2008 US Open Novak Djokovic - 0

Djokovic took an injury time midway through the second set to get a painful hip treated, complained of an upset stomach and also appeared to be hobbling around court after rolling his ankle.

Robredo, who lost 4-6 6-2 6-3 5-7 6-3, did not seem too sympathetic.

"I have pain, as well. I was running like hell and my feet were burning but I say nothing," said Robredo, who tumbled to the ground in the fifth set while lunging after a Djokovic shot.

"I think that if you're not fit enough, then don't play.

"But after every time he was asking for a trainer, he was running like hell and he was making the shot. But he does what he does a lot of times."

Robredo felt Djokovic was taking advantage of rules that allowed players to receive multiple medical breaks provided it was a new problem that needed to be treated by the trainer.

It is not the first time that Djokovic has been accused of stretching the rules.

In 2006 and 2007, he was criticised by many opponents, including Roger Federer during a Davis Cup rubber, for seeking medical times outs at critical junctures in a match.

"So I think we should take care a lot more of these things, because one thing is that if you fell down like I did, I can have blood and it's normal that trainer gets in because there's blood or whatever," said Robredo.

"But for having pain, I had pain, as well, all over my body because I think I run a lot more than him and I said nothing.

"So did I trust (believe) him? No. I think he took his time because he did it because he was a little bit more tired and that's a part of the game. It helped him a lot."

Djokovic's next opponent, Andy Roddick, was already making a mental note of the medical time outs the Serbian can request when they meet in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

"A back and a hip? And a cramp? Bird flu, anthrax, SARS, common cough and cold," Roddick listed for reporters.

  1. If the rules allow medical time out, then it is allowed and no fuss about it. The important thing is that when one player get rested during medical timeouts, the other player is rested too. if a player does not like a rest believing it could make him cold, jug a little on the court, is it hard or is it easier for a loser to drink the SOUR grape juice?

  3. well, injury time is necessary, and it can happen at crucial moments, winbledon final 2007 Nadal had his knee looked at and lost to Federer and tried to draw the post match speaker's attention to it but to no avail.Final of Hamburg this year,Nadal again needed treatment in his final against Federer, and we saw this time a blood oozing blister on his foot the size of Manhattan. But these injury breaks might have an effect on the other player,it can cause a loss of focus enough to lose a MATCH. After that break,Federer who had really outclassed Nadal and took the first set and led 5-2 in the second, never played again as good and lost.Federer was sick anyhow this year and we all saw a black lump on his face big like a second nose for a month or so,you can still notice the mark it left on his right cheek.and still, never missed a tournament and still reached finals in all tournaments but 2. He is 28 and in tennis years that is old,we can all see he misses shots that he never used to miss, instead of acing 25 per match he's down by half of that,he even double faults 4 to 6 times per match compared to never before, nevertheless,he's still at it and better than most and i'll never tire of him.But some players overdo their injury just like in football to gain something that is not and should not be a part of any game. And shame on those.Yes Djoko has given points back to his opponents many times but he did fake, shame on him.If a serial killer gave money to the poor, would that make him a hero? i don't think so.

  5. But...most i think, most i realise ...how good had Nole played after his medical time -out:)If he felt so bad, how comes he started to play better? I do not acuse him, i just comment the moment. Now, i guess you are pleased.

  6. bamboosich, i did not mention either a name:) I was "answering" to disco.serbia and told him my opinion about the idea, the sbject, etc of faking and unfairness. We were talking about something, discussing, not acusing someone. And let's be serious, its already known that most of the sportives use that...against the opponents. I am not the first or the last person who is saying that. I don't give names, but its not talking about WHO is doing that, but about the FACT..that is happening. And its unfair.

  7. To Pitic:
you talk about fair play? When was it that Djokovic wasn't fair? Was it when so many times he corrected the umpire's call in favour of his oponent that he wasn't fair? Are you saying that he was so unfair when he said the ball was in on a break point in a decicive game of the match even when the umpire said it was out and the point went to his oponent? Oh the unfairnes of his play! You want to talk about unfair? Gonzales stole the Olympic final from Blake, cause everyone know that he touched the ball with his racket but said nothing like a "puta" that he is... Or Soderling publicly humiliating Nadal at Wimbledon last year, making fun of him through the whole match... You are right, now I see the unfairness of a medical time out...

  9. disco.serbia...in sports should exists FAIR-PLAY. Here, shouldn't exists hate or all the bad feelings. Here should exist the possitive feelings, sincerity and respect for the opponent. Everybody should win in the most pure way possible. To have integrity, to keep it and have everyone's respect too. That's what i think about sport. It shouldn't exist FAKE. This is not cinema or theatre.

  12. Nole may fake but hey... There is no rule against time outs. There is no way to prove his faking. Besides, it is a part of his strategy. And in world that we're living in, when no rule is above interests (even Olympic Games are much more business and politics than sport),,, It is just useless and stupid to blame Djokovic for that. So I just hope that he won't strand on Rodick's insults. And by the way... Nobody from Eurosport wrote a story about those incorrect and unproven accusations. And why is that so, we all know.

    From disco.serbia, on Thu 4 Sep 3:03AM
  13. Omg, Djokovic asked for a medical time out. Oh no! There will be no play for 5 minutes. His oponents will wither and die, and he will therefore be a winner by simply being the last one standing... What a master plan, I bet you all just wish you thought of it first... One wins only if one plays better at that moment, at least in tennis it is that simple...

  15. I do agree that Djokonic is a bit an actor and all drama but on the other hand he is what tennis really needed, prior to Rafa”s and his appearance was boring as a hell, what we were seeing was emotionless players on the court hitting the ball with out any filing or expression just like machines. For us as a spectators we needed a bit more drama emotions and extremely good tennis so we can have a full enjoyment like in the era of Jimmy Connors and for that you need good guys, bad guys wild and savages, that what is making the sport more exciting There were some players on the tour like Jeff Tarango for example but he was number 50 in the world that is why many people have never ever heard of him What we needed is a top 5 tennis player with a bit of attitude an personality and we have to give Djokovic all the credit as a top player.

From what I can read below people emotions are up and running and the interest for the tennis has increased dramatically and that what really does matter to all real tennis lowers.

  16. It's not the jealousy *

From budimirbojan, on Thu 4 Sep 1:10AM
  17. Oh, c'mon Zoran, it's the the jealousy... get real.

Djokovic called for a trainer at fourth game of the 2nd set, when he was 3-0 up (breakin whose rhythm??), and another one between fourth and fifth set which wasn't even full medical but a minute or two (He broke whose rhythm by that? Robredo was holding until 2 all in fifth set). Beside, after so many games, you can't really say that medical time out wasn't good for Robredo. As I recall he massaged his leg while Novak was getting that second medical. Robredo had cramps as well, but the fact is he didn't call for medical not because he is so fair player, but because he knew Novak would use that time to get his breath back...

Anyway, who loses has the right to be mad! :P

  18. Do I hear jeleous Brits?
The truth is that Serbia has number 1 and number 2 women players in the world, and number 3 in men's competition. I beleive Great Britain will have to wait a century to reach that standrad:)
Anyway, go spill out the hatred in you want. We got used to it.

  19. Djoko has disappointed to the most neutral fans. Only he really knows what he did and why so to disrupt his opponent concentration and bag that crucial game against Robredo in that last fifth decisive game of an equal competitive match.
I had Djoko in high regard until all this speculation that he might have feigned and exagerated most of his alleged injuries but growing stronger which of course does not fit during that last match.
If he did such a shambolic thing then Mr Djoko should go to the circus and do what he does best because tennis perhaps is not for him anymore.
