Simon Ammann secured overall victory in the Grand Prix summer series in Hakuba.
The Swiss, who claimed the Four Nations Grand Prix after winning the first three events of the summer in Hinterzarten, Pragelato and Courcheval, was third in both events in Japan.
Ammann has a lead of 140 points over Robert Kranjec ahead of the ninth and final competition in Klingenthal next month.
Ammann said: "I only achieved some of my goals in Hakuba. Whilst I did secure the overall title in the Grand Prix and became the first Swiss to do so, my jumps here were not good enough.
"There is still some work to do before the FIS World Cup begins in Kuusamo."
Veteran Noriaki Kasai won the opening event on home soil in Hakuba with Kranjec taking the second event 24 hours later.
Traditionally, the Grand Prix has given a good indication of the form for the upcoming season. The last four winners - Jakub Janda, Adam Malysz, Thomas Morgenstern and Gregor Schlierenzauer - each went on to win the overall World Cup the following winter.
