Premier League - Wilshere out until November

Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere faces a further two months out of action due to the ankle injury which has blighted his summer.

Wilshere had been hoping to be back in action by now, after suffering the injury in June. The 19-year-old was thought to have recovered by late July but he limped off after just seven minutes of Arsenal's Emirates Cup match with New York Red Bulls.

He then suffered a setback in training last month, and was forecast to miss "two or three weeks" by manager Arsene Wenger. However Wilshere is now not expected back until November.

An Arsenal spokesman said on Sunday: "He will be out for a couple more months, he needs to rest and then we will see where he's at."

Wilshere is wearing a protective boot to guard the affected right ankle, which Wenger claims was first injured when the youngster was on England duty against Switzerland.

Wenger won his running battle with England Under-21 counterpart Stuart Pearce over Wilshere's selection for the summer's European Championships in Denmark, but the rest he was able to enjoy in the close season was not sufficient to cure the ankle problem.

He will now miss crucial matches for club and country, including England's final Euro 2012 qualifying group game in Montenegro next month, and Champions League and Premier League fixtures with Arsenal.

Speaking just prior to Arsenal confirming Wilshere would need an extended break, his club colleague Theo Walcott expressed hope the teenager would be able to return sooner than in two months' time.

Walcott said at an England press conference: "Jack's a very important player for us. It's a shame he's had this ankle problem.

"But he's a bright lad - he'll be back as soon as he can. Fingers crossed it's going to be a bit sooner than that [two months]. He'll have to get back as soon as possible. We're going to miss him but he's professional enough to get on with it."

  1. Bloody hell. All we need. WHY!!!!???? im sick of our players getting injured. Especially the ones who our key to our chances/hopes. Something aint right about our training grouds...our new pitch? our physios? something of someone is off. I accept that Wenger does have a preference of nimble quick footed, small built players, but being injury prone does not directly relate to size. Whats wrong!!!???

  2. I blame his national team participation. He's only 19, Mr. Capello. If you continue to call him up, carrying injuries, how is he ever going to get better? This same problem arose with Mr. Wayne Rooney, and after a proper layoff...look how well he's doing!
I understand he got injured playing for Arsenal, but he shouldn't have returned so quickly. IMO.

  10. Thers does seem to be an ongoing trend of these injuries at the Arsenal.
I hope JW is not going to be like Vermaelen and be out all year.
That was the main reason for Arsenal failing last year IMHO only.
    Fantastic footballer.

  11. He's a footballer, and he's got an injury... not uncommon. What seems to be a concern is how many we at Arsenal have had. This happened to NUFC a few seasons back, I think they ended up changing their training ground surfaces wholesale... remember players only tread out on their home pitch occasionally, but are active for extended periods on the training ground most days. Then again it seems that Cescs ongoing hamstring has been relieved by a two hour flight!

While the King feels Wilshere is a permanent sicknote, highly overated and a scummy chav, the King cannot help but feel sad for Arsene Wenger losing yet another player in his time of need.

  17. As a Man United fan, this is a huge blow for the lad and Arsenal. But now Cesc and Nasri have left Arsenal I feel they will be too much pressure for the lad when he does get back from injury. On a positive note he is a very talented player and he and Tom Cleverley are the future midfield for England. I wish Wilshere all the best in his recovery and hope to see him start for Arsenal as soon as possible, from a honest Man United fan.
